ABOUT MARGARIDA XIRGU

Unfortunately, I could not find much info on the www about this great Catalan actress (1888-1969) A child prodigy, she excelled both in dramatic and lighter roles and she was highly esteemed by her contemporaries. She worked in Madrid (Spain) for some time and in Montevideo (Uruguay) too. She is often mentioned in many of Lorca’s biographies, since they became great friends and she successfully staged most of his plays. In her later years she became a drama teacher, starting her own school and establishing her own methods.

Spanish writer Antonina Rogrigo has written several books on this admirable woman.

My grandfather Joan Clivillé (b. 1905) was fortunate to actually attend one of her memorable performances at Teatre Fortuny in Reus (Baix Camp, Tarragona, Catalonia)
