TYPE: semi-automatic (30-round) detachable magazine cartridge rifle
REMARKS: Eugene Stoner's 1956 design. Top quality civilian AR-15 clone that was budget priced, built in Windham, Maine. Interchangeable upper 1 in 9 twist 16 inch M4 & 20 inch HBAR (heavy barrel). MAKE: Chicago
MODEL: Protector
MADE: USA
CALIBER: 32 Extra Short
SERIAL NUMBER: 9007
YEAR MADE: 1893
TYPE: small frame fixed cylinder double action only 7-round cartridge revolver
REMARKS: Chicago Arms owner Peter Finnegan contracted Ames Sword Company to build 12,800 palm pistols at their factory in Massachusetts. Supposedly built so that Peter could sell them as souvenirs at the 1893 World's Fair in Illinois, production numbers were obviously missed and it resulted in litigation. Chicago Arms bought the palm pistol patents from Minneapolis Arms in 1892, who in turn bought the rights from Frenchman Jaques Turbiaux, who invented it in 1882. Marked: CHICAGO FIRE ARMS CO. - CHICAGO.ILL. - THE PROTECTOR - PAT.MCH.6,1883.AUG.29.93

MAKE: Drilling Gun
MODEL: Ed. Kettner
MADE: Germany
CALIBER SHOTGUNS: 12 Gauge
CALIBER RIFLE: 8x48R Sauer
SERIAL NUMBER: 53703
YEAR MADE: 1899 (December)
TYPE: break-action 3-round combination cartridge shotguns rifle
REMARKS: All purpose hunting weapon that's still a popular model in Europe, retailed in Cologne, Germany. Drillings are a double shotgun for distant birds or nearby large mammals, with a rifled single shot cartridge rifle placed underneath and between the two shotgun barrels for longer distance shots on larger animals, that's my guess anyway. Two adjustable safety triggers shoot the shotguns, flip switch and recock on left side allows rifle to fire. Flip up iron sight, 26 inch barrels, claw scope mount. Marked: NITRO-P (pre-1912) - "pound sterling" L - "Byzantine birds" - "crown over U" (Germany) - "crown over S" (smoothbore shotgun) - "crown over W" (choked shotgun) - "crown over G" (rifled barrel rifle).

SERIAL NUMBER: 3546
YEAR MADE: 1953
TYPE: military semi-automatic (20-round) detachable magazine cartridge rifle
Remarks: High quality battlefield rifle that was sold around the world during the 1950's. Basic concept from 1936, the design is credited to FN Herstal team leader Dieudonne Saive, better known for the FAL assault rifle which was already being developed as the first FN-49 were being built. Mine went to the Argentine Navy, was then rebarreled in 1962 for the military from 7.65 Argentine to more modern 7.62 NATO. I'd say fabreek nass-ee-en-al. Small scratch on stock: PUA 38. Marked: FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE_HERSTAL BELGIQUE - "star over P" - "letter O wearing a crown" - "R on an A" - "perron" (Liege) - "Argentina handshake crest" - "ARA in square" (Armada Republica Argentina). TYPE: small frame single action semi-automatic (7-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol

MAKE: Garand
MODEL: M1
MADE: USA
CALIBER: 30-06 Springfield
SERIAL NUMBER: M1 13808
YEAR MADE: 2000
TYPE: semi-automatic 8-round clip fed internal magazine (magazine holds seven rounds with closed bolt) cartridge rifle
REMARKS: American front line workhorse during WWII, post-WWI design by John Garand. Mine's assembled from parts at CAI (Century International Arms) on a steel receiver contracted from Ruger's Pine Tree Investment castings. 1954 Beretta made Denmark issue 24" barrel is like new, find that in a CMP! GM50 "crown over FKF over 1955" bayonet. Loading is famous for eating thumbs, does hurt. Moderate bounce on target reacquire, perfect military peep sights. Safe and cheap throw together that's very accurate and reliable. People have published phony looking information about CAI built weapons, they've an almost identical Lithgow webpage with the same "do not fire" jargon. Cast versus forged steel receivers is also a silly topic. Did I mention it was really cheap? About $400. Great barrel/parts but bottom bin stock. Rack Grade government surplus is more collectible but is not always going to be a better shooter. Garand surname is pronounced like "hair" with a "g" instead of "h" with a short "errand," so it'd sound like "gairend"; original French slur sounds like "guron," universally called M1 "ga-rand."

MAKE: Glock
MODEL: 22
MADE: Austria
CALIBER: 40 Smith & Wesson
SERIAL NUMBER: AWL 364 US
YEAR MADE: 1994 (April)
TYPE: large frame single action semi-automatic (15-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol
REMARKS: Gaston Glock came from Deutsch-Wagram outside Vienna, his 1980 design isn't totally original as H&K had made "plastic" frames for years, but he found a way to make them cheap. Later went to (tax haven) Luxembourg where a business partner tried to have him killed, seems an unarmed Gaston took the would-be assassins down bare fisted. 1990 introduced Model 22 is commonly issued, three 15-round drop free mags, contract tactical mag release, slide release, sights; stiff recoil in even 40 caliber. Trigger pull finishes cocking a partially precocked striker. 4.49" barrel, 1.70lbs. Marked: Glock - 22 - AUSTRIA - 40 SW - MADE IN AUSTRIA - US. Pat. 4,534,889 4,825,744 4,893,546 - "polygon" (polygon rifling). Import mark: GLOCK. INC., SMYRNA GA.

MAKE: Heckler & Koch
MODEL: P7
MADE: Germany
CALIBER: 9mm Luger
SERIAL NUMBER: 54127
YEAR MADE: 1983 (December)
TYPE: medium frame single action semi-automatic (8-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol
REMARKS: Claimed to be the fastest quick-draw pistol. The P7 has a full size 4.13 inch polygon rifled barrel on a compact frame, 2.26lbs loaded, light recoil, extremely accurate, extremely reliable. Butt magazine release. Squeeze safety cocks the firing pin making a single action pistol act more like a safe double action. Heckler & Koch (pronounced heckler & coke) was founded in 1949 by post-war Mauser employees. Put together from loosely based American squeeze cocking and Swiss/German Volkssturmgewehr gas retarding concepts in 1976 by an HK engineering team led by Helmut Weldle. Production started in 1979 for the West German government to replace wartime police sidearms, along with simultaneous civilian sales and exports. Hellenic Greece Arms made their own licensed PSP. MAKE: Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works
MODEL: Safety Hammerless
MADE: USA
CALIBER: 32 Smith & Wesson
SERIAL NUMBER: 20310
YEAR MADE: 1900-1908
TYPE: small frame top break cylinder double action only 5-round cartridge revolver
REMARKS: Iver Johnson immigrated to the USA from Norway in 1863, worked as a gunsmith, then cofounded Johnson & Bye in Worcester. Johnson bought out Martin Bye and moved the company to Fitchburg in 1891, Iver died in 1895, the factory built millions of good quality firearms into the 1970's. Leon Czolgosz shot President McKinley with a 32cal IJ similar to this one (that one has a 3" barrel and exposed hammer), he could've gotten the idea from emigrant Gaetano Bresci, who bought one then returned to Italy where he used it to kill a European king. Senator Kennedy was shot with a Model 55. Original 2" barrel, pretty accurate, concealed hammer, safety trigger. Built 1896-1908 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Marked: T. JUNE 16, 96 AUG. 25, 96. PT 16 04 PATS PENDING.

MAKE: Jennings

MADE: USA
CALIBER: 22 Long Rifle
SERIAL NUMBER: 602942
YEAR MADE: 1988
TYPE: small frame single action semi-automatic (6-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol
REMARKS: Jesus says, "he that hath no sword let him sell his garment and buy one." Ultra cheap Baby Browning 1931 type pocket gun. Built by Calwestco in Irvine, California. My first handgun was only $50 new! Has been many places and fired many thousands of rounds. It's important to use longer cased hyper velocity ammunition like CCI Stinger for accuracy and reliable feeding/ejection, generally true for all pocket sized twenty-two semi-autos.

MAKE: JO-LO-AR
MODEL: F
MADE: Spain
CALIBER: 380 ACP
SERIAL NUMBER: 21757
YEAR MADE: 1926
TYPE: medium frame single action semi-automatic (9-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol
REMARKS: Invented by Jose Lopez Arnaiz, the lever on the slide allows one-hand chambering of a round. Arnaiz bought already made Spanish Sharp pistols that were licensed to gunmaker Hijos de Calixto Arrizabalaga of Eibar, then installed his lever and resold them to civilians, maybe a military contract or two. 4.25" tip-up barrel on this model, 2.01 lbs. Marked: "crown over x in shield" (Eibar) - PISTOLA "JO.LO.AR" EIBAR (ESPANA) ANO 1924 PATENTES Nos 68027 Y 70235 - "crown over P" (pistol) - (internal) 1926 - "JO.LO.AR"-F. 8286 - P.V. MAKE: Lignose
MODEL: Einhand 3A
MADE: Germany
CALIBER: 25 ACP
SERIAL NUMBER 1st gun: 31119
SERIAL NUMBER 2nd gun: 36974
YEAR MADE 1st & 2nd gun: 1921-1940
TYPE: small frame single action semi-automatic (9-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol
REMARKS: Einhands have a moving trigger guard so they can chamber a round with only one-hand, first built by Theodor Bergmann. Probably developed by Hugo Schmeisser, based on the Browning 1903, they use Witold Chylewski's one-hand lever concept: Chylewski-SIG. Chylewski's patent was bought by Bergmann in 1917. Bergmann's Suhl operations were run by Lignose Corporation after 1921, factory was destroyed during WWII. Someone scratched "VERGO" & "MAY 1960" on the inside side of the grips on 31119. 6-round (Model 2A) and two-hand (minus the A) models were also produced. 2.125" barrels, 15oz, 25acp Browning 1908 style low profile sights are pretty accurate to 15 yards. All the little parts are serial numbered (Germans love serial numbers). Marked: (inside) H - (inside frame & slide) "circle K" - AKT.-GES.LIGNOSE.BERLIN. ABTEILUNG SUHL-CAL.6,35-D.R.P. - "crown over N" (nitro).

Three more one-hand pistols:

Norinco Model 77B, the large frame (9-round) 9x19mm seems based on the European pockets but is a much different design. The Red Chinese PLA issued a 7.65mm pocket version Type 77 during the 1980's. Zbrojovka Praga (Czech) made a one-handed 25acp during the 1920's that had a folding trigger.

YEAR MADE 2nd & 3rd gun: 1917
TYPE: military straight pull 5-round clip fed internal magazine cartridge rifle
REMARKS: Designed by German-born Ferdinand Mannlicher (pronounced manlicker with the English alphabet) in the 1880's while living in Austria, variations became the Austrian front line rifle until WWII, several million were built for their military. After WWI many long rifles were rebuilt into this 19.65 inch short barrel "Stutzen" design as a cheap way to modernize more cumbersome weapons. Relegated to rear line or police roles during the Second World War as Austria and Hungary's front line weapons gradually became German style. Rebuilding done 1930-1938 at Steyr (I say stire like tire) in Austria and FEG in Hungary. #1 started out as an Austrian M90 Carbine in 1891, rebuilt/rebarreled in 1931 by Hungary as an M95 with stacking hook, was then issued to the Hungarian secret police. Marked: CS.1964 - CSENDOR - K.A.B. - OEWG. #2 built during WWI, carbine sights. #3 has rifle sights. Import barrel mark (2nd & 3rd): CAI ST ALB VT.

MODEL: 1916 Short Rifle (converted 1893)
MADE: Spain
CALIBER: 308 Winchester
SERIAL NUMBER: OT-15296
YEAR MADE: 1896-1916
TYPE: military bolt-action 5-round internal magazine cartridge rifle
REMARKS: Oviedo made M93 Mauser (sounds like Chairman Mao-zer), same type used during the Spanish War, mine was returned during or after the Spanish Civil War and cut into a Model 1916 (gas escape & thumb space for clips), rebored in 1965 from 7mm Mauser to 7.62x51mm for the civil guard (federal police). Got mine at Bob's Guitars, just about given away. The police FR-7 upgrade looks like the military's FR-8 but it uses these much older receivers. Not sure why the Spanish would build an FR-7 and then just rebore a Model 1916 alongside it. Maybe the two models differentiated civilian police and paramilitary police forces? Unmarked except inspector Maltese cross stamps on parts, remnants of "Fabrica de Armas Oviedo" crest, and new "OT" serial number was put on most parts. Marked inside: "flaming bomb" - "R" - "AA circle" (inspection). Import barrel mark (hidden under stock): OVIEDO SPAIN M1916 SAMCO MIA FL 308W.

SERIAL NUMBER: 493651
YEAR MADE: 1935
TYPE: small frame single action semi-automatic (8-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol
REMARKS: Production update on the 25acp 1910 pocket gun Mauser, the 1914 and 1934 are half an inch larger. Germans everywhere were packing these. My 1934 was made for the commercial market, 21oz, 3.4" barrel. Came with the usual "dead officer" story attached to most of them, more likely some farmer carried it for a few years before moving here with his family. Grips are from old-time Franzite in Chicago. Marked: "double crown over U" (Germany) - "Mauser banner" - MAUSER-WERKE A.G.OBERNDORF A.N. - Cal. 7,65-D.R.P.u.A.P.

SERIAL NUMBER 1st gun: 28346
SERIAL NUMBER 2nd gun: 46224
YEAR MADE 1st gun: 1952
YEAR MADE 2nd gun: 1956
TYPE: military bolt-action 5-round internal magazine cartridge rifle
REMARKS: Weapons that were rebuilt and reissued to rear line Spanish troopers starting in 1965. Designed to somewhat resemble a CETME it was just cheaper to rebuild a Mauser. I suspect it was done for overall Spanish troop recognition, fake semi-auto gas tube is really a cleaning kit, the sight designer really missed the mark but it's accurate enough with a leaf and three peeps. Suppose the whole contraption could have been the work of highly mobile former Mauser engineer Ludwig Vorgrimmler, but have heard he left Spain before the project began. Made from Model 1943 La Coruna receivers that were rebarreled with new M58 assault rifle barrels, the FR-8 carbine can shoot any ammunition safely, heavy hunting loads too, the strength of its action is equivalent to a WWII German Kar98k. A person might still get into the ridiculous 7.62 NATO vs 308 WIN debate. Mine are from a Big 5 sporting goods sale rack, neat and safe weapons that happen to be low cost surplus. Regular CETME bayonets. Pictured plastic ammo holder isn't military issue. Chamber headspace is supposed to be checked by importer. Marked: FABRICA DE ARMAS LA CORUNA 1952 Cal 7.62 (#2 1956). Pronounced "moesin" (supposedly his family uses "moyseen") rifle or a "nagone" (silent t). Mine built at Tula, one of many taken from Russian warehouses in 1917 Finland. Rebuilt during the Winter War by Sako for the Civil Guard. Soviet 3.5x PU scope, modified round receiver scope mount turned into a hexagon receiver quick-mount. SERIAL NUMBER: 21856
YEAR MADE: 1898
TYPE: military medium frame fixed cylinder double action 7-round cartridge revolver
REMARKS: Part of an 1896 contract to produce gas seal revolvers for the Russian tsar. Old Nick bought at least 50,000 of the Belgian made, then purchased manufacturing rights and new factory tooling for the outdated sidearm. Russian production began 1900, built at Tula and Izhevsk until 1945, and in Poland for a short time. Somewhat based on 1880's Pieper gas seal revolvers, the solid frame Nagant 1895 itself was patented in 1894 and is reminiscent of their earlier Scandinavian and South American models. Russian nickel, 1.11lbs, 4.5" barrel. Bought in 1992 when CAI imported a batch of antiques from the former USSR. REMARKS: Chinese copy of Russia's Sergei Simonov 1945 design. I bought mine for a pricey $200 from a batch of mass imports in 1989. SKS are still used by ceremonial guards, more expensive to make than a typical Kalashnikov, they were built into at least the 1980's. Folding spike bayonet, 20.5" chromed barrel. REMARKS: Chinese copy of Mikhail Kalashnikov's 1946 design, stamped receiver 1959 style AKM. These cheap and reliable weapons are helping poor farmers around the world to civilize their lands. Mandatory California registration, 1 in 9 twist 16" chromed barrel, bolt-on folding spike bayonet, can use surplus AK-74 (not AK-47) magazines with 20 rounds. CALIBER: 9mm Luger & 7.62mm Tokarev
SERIAL NUMBER: 39004132
YEAR MADE: 1994
TYPE: medium frame single action semi-automatic (8-round) detachable magazine cartridge pistol
REMARKS: American John "Browning 1903" basic design in a reliable Russian bureau manager Fedor Tokarev improved, Chinese built, military style handgun. Tokarev pistols served from 1930 until being replaced by the 1961 introduced Makarov variants. Russian aftermarket interchangeable 7.62x25mm chromed barrel & magazine, replaced standard "Tokagypt" grips with Russian no-star versions. I have most parts of a Norinco 213 (1993 Vientiane carry piece), same weapon but the 8-round mags don't interchange. They're superb! Despite Norinco's own claim of a 3,000 round service life. The modern Chinese steel is strong enough for any hot 9mm pistol ammo, long light slide and large rear sight makes it easy to chamber a round by sliding against a belt or pants, allows a safe "condition three" carry with rapid deployment. Ideally a round should be carried in the chamber, but that's only safe on the larger more refined (and more expensive) Browning 1911. Marked: 99 (factory code). Import mark: A.C.C. REMARKS: Patented in 1886 by Dutch-born Belgian immigrant Henri Pieper, an associate of the Nagant brothers consortium and designer of complex mechanical goods like early hybrid cars. Cylinder on the revolver cams forward to form a gas seal like on the Nagant Model 1895. Henri, in turn, was a conceptual student of American Daniel Wesson. First built in Belgium, this style was licensed to and built in Steyr, Austria. Two tone black & gold finish, checkered grips, 2.33lbs, 5.6875" barrel. Carbine versions were made and sold in small numbers to Mexican federales. Marked: WAFFENFABRIK STEYR.

REMARKS: Small civilian pocket pistol that was patented around 1906 by August Schuler of Suhl, Germany. Gas pressure ejects first three spent rounds, barrels act as mag and sights. REMARKS: At 500 yards this device can trim leaves from a tree, maximum effective pruning reach is about 1,000 yards. America's Remington Firearms helped Germany's Peter Paul Mauser design some rifles back in 1865. Kevlar reinforced stock, adjustable trigger pull, Harris (Model S) bipod, 26 inch floating HBAR. REMARKS: Produced by Georg Roth, invented by Karel Krnka and his relatives. 80,000 pistols were built at Steyr and FEG for Austrian Habsburg troopers. Trigger pull feels like a double action revolver, complex system is accurate, operates a bit like the later Glock by finishing cocking a partially precocked striker. Must be a Bohemian thing.
