I have been searching for friends who have lived in foster homes with me in the past and have
been finding it very difficult. Then, one day, while riding a Toronto Transit bus along Eglington
Avenue just east of Yonge street, it hit me!
I should create a database. This database does not have to give out exact location, but can
give details that only the previous residents of the home will be able to make any use of it.
The main goal is to help those who want to connect with each other. But sometimes you may not
know what the exact address of the house was, or details like that, but you might remember silly
things like nick names you gave each other, or funny things you used to do all the time.
This database will allow you to add this information, as well as search for these bits of
information that nobody else would otherwise have.
As an example:
I lived in a group home out in Picton called Twin Maple Family Homes. Usually there were seven
guys at a time living in this house. We all had nicknames for each other. Charles was Chuckles,
Paulo was "lapho" (According to Jake and I), they had dogs named "Scooter" and "Butch" who now
that I think about it, the poor souls had to live outside the whole year... man I wish I could
go back in time and save them... Having the dogs there, was a Make Work Project to give us more chores of shovelling snow from the kennel, cleaning the dogs washroom area, and feeding them, now that I
think about it.
Anyhow, the database would hold such information in a format somewhat like this.
Your First Name | Your Last Name | Foster/Group Home Name | Your Nick Name |
John | Dunn | Twin Maple Family Home | Dunnster |
There would be many more fields or collumns to fill in as well as some "comments" sections in order to
allow free form text for long ramblings, school names you attended while living there, churches,
friends names, scout / girl guide troop names, team names, etc...
That is the whole goal for this project. This project could be sponsored by a corporation that
possibly creates internet based database software, or at least the database could be run as an
example of their products' ability, while at the same time, helping thousands of lost children,
find each other, and connect with the only past they have.
This sponsorship could be an excellent way to hold the annual "Foster Care Family Re-union"
with banners, and other public events. Read more about the annual event on the home page under
"Foster Care Family Reunion"
If you know anyone who might be interested in helping out with such a venture, please let me
know by emailing me. You can find my email at the top of each page on this site.
