In the research for real historical documentation, it would be the Genealogy compiled by Stephen Larsen, that would serve as a major clue. Researching and expanding a previous genealogical family tree done on an early New England Colonial, by the name of Capt. Hugh Mason, this major clue became apparent... especially when it had Butler, and Hickok's that inter-married one another.
Ed's connection to the Mason Family, is by way of Great Grand Mother,
Jessie Harriet Mason. On another branch of the extended family tree, the Butler Family line of James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok, goes by way of  his Great Great Grand Mother, Polly Butler of Vermont, and Ed Moch's Great Great Grandfather, Daniel Cota also of Vermont. Though there seems to be no direct inter-marriages found at this time... the idea that it does open up possibilities is suspect?
Though it would seem that the name "Butler" would be English, or perhaps Irish... both the Butler and the Cota lines were "French Arcadian", who left French Canada (New France/Quebec) to Vermont... where most of The other French Arcadian cousins went South, to as far as New Orleans.

   In the marriage of
Eleanore Butler Alexander to Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (III), the Son of President Teodore Roosevelt (Jr.), opens up another family avenue, by way of Ed's Grandmother, Constance Martha Alexander. The possible connection of Constance and Eleanore being Sisters or Cousins (More like cousin's perhaps?) comes full circle in the marriage of Constance Martha Alexander, to Maj. General Norman Daniel "Dutch" Cota (Descended from Daniel Cota of Vermont).
It is Historically noted that both Gen. Roosevelt, and Gen. Cota knew one another, and , became good friends... thus confirming the comment made by Ed's Father at Sagamore Hill!

Back to Deadwood...

As like "Wild Bill" Hickok... another character of Deadwood fame comes to light as well. His name was,
Seth Bullock. Who with his Brother, James Bullock, also settled in Deadwood... and made a success in the hardware business with friend and associate, Sol Starr. Even though Deadwood had it's golden riches... it was by far, a peaceful place. Though it was noted that both Seth and "Wild Bill" met in Deadwood... it was a short association. The lawlessness of Deadwood, and nearby mining town of Lead, cause Seth Bullock to apply for Sheriff of Deadwood... and the outlining area. In a strange turn of events one fine day... Sheriff Bullock was on his ranch, and two individuals set foot on his property. In this encounter, he would discover that one was chasing the other... One was an alledged horse thief... and the other a fellow Sheriff. This fellow Sheriff, turned out to be Theodore Roosevelt Jr.!
In this stange twist of fate, it would seem that Sheriff Theodore Roosevelt's Mother's name was
Martha Bullock... of The Georgia Bullock's. It is not fully clear, just how close in cousinry both Seth and Theodore were... but that didn't seem to stop them?
Both Seth and Theodore, would became long lasting friends... and Theodore, would send his children to Seth's ranch from time to time... one of his children being
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (III).

In another marriage... Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (III) son, Theodore Roosevelt IV, would marry, Elizabeth Mason Babcock into the family lineup. Thus again, bringing The Mason Family line... from which Ed Moch, and Gen. Cota were descendants to Capt. Dexter Mason. If it seems a bit confusing... your not the only one... and it's get even more so???

More kin in Deadwood...

Like Sheriff Seth Bullock, and his Brother James Bullock... another set of Brothers came to Deadwood. Like the Bullock's... Will Emery Adams, and his Brother, James Adams. They made a shot at success, and openned up a grocery-supply store. With the ups and downs of Deadwood in those days... James Adams desided to leave, and later settled in California. W.E. Adams stayed, and made a fortune. As Sheriff Seth Bullock kept law and order in the area, W.E. Adams became Mayor of Deadwood... and for a long time?
It is claimed that both W.E. and James Adams were of The Adam's of Boston or Quincy... at least definate cousin to them. If so... then a distant cousin by the name of
Abilgail Adams, would be related. This Abigail Adams would marry, Capt. Dexter Mason.

Again... another possible Deadwood connection is made. It is reported that Capt. Mason was involved in The Mexican-Ameican war, and The American Civil War, in which his son, Fremont Mason was named after Gen. Fremont. Also... it would be noted that during the Ameican Civil War, the Grand son of President John Quincy Adams, Named Gen. Charles Francis Adams Jr., would play a part in Deadwood History. After the Civil War... he would later become the President of The later known Union Pacific Rail Road Co. The direct or in-direct involvement would open up rail road traffic to Deadwood, and the rest of The Dakota's.

The "Wild Bill" and "Buffalo Bill" Connection...

In the days when James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok was an Indian Scout, and later a lawman... Through the years, he was associated with none other than, William "Buffalo Bill" Coty. Is the name "Coty"  a varient of the name, "Cota" then this would open up another family door... no matter how distant the notion?
Looking back into the migration of French Alcadian's from French Canada going south of the border, and into the Louisiana Territory... The Genealogy of The
"Cote" families show name variations. From Cota, Cote, Coti, Codi, ect... it is highly suggested that the name "Cody" is also a definate varient of "Cote" (Cota being the possible parent name).
