This is the Upper Falls. This railroad tressle, The Portage Bridge, runs high above the falls and gorge. Built in 1852, it was destroyed by a terrible fire in 1875. Three hundred acres of timber were used in the construction of the orginal wooden bridge, which was known as the longest, tallest wooden bridge in the world. This is the metal bridge that replaces it today. You can hike up to the top for a breath taking view of the gorge, river and falls. It's well worth the climb!
