Letchworth State Park

Hi, My Name is Jan, and I Love New York!
Thanks God, for Letchworth and all of your other beautiful creations!

Hi! It's nice to see you here!

Enjoy your visit!
My daughter, Sunny, also welcomes you to New York!

Genesee River Gorge 10/98

Letchworth State Park, often dubbed as the Grand Canyon of the east, is the most beautiful area, in Western New York. These are some of the pictures I took in the summer and fall of 1998, and the winter of 1999. I hope you enjoy them!

Letchworth State Park is 35 miles south of Rochester, New York. The park is 17 miles long. The deep valleys and the gorge have been formed by glaciers blocking the early river beds. Every year the river cuts deeper into the cliffs, which are already up to 600 feet high.

There are so many things to do and see here. Hiking trails are anywhere from one-half a mile to twenty miles long. You can camp in your tent or rent a cabin.

If you like, you can go white water rafting, down the Genesee River, or for a hot air balloon ride over the river and falls. In the winter, you can go tubing down the side of a hill.

The park was created by William Pryor Letchworth, a nineteenth century indrustrialist and conservationist, who was overcome with the beauty of the scenery on a train ride through New York. He soon purchased a large house near the gorge, now known as the Glen Iris, and as much land as possible. He eventually bought 1000 acres of land, including the the three water falls. Today the park consists of 14,350 acres of land. He planted many thousands of trees which are still standing today. Just about every North American species of tree can be found here.

Across from the Glen Iris, you can find The William Pryor Letchworth Museum with tons of artifacts, books and history about Mr. Letchworth and his beautiful park. You will find lots of information about Mary Jemison, the white woman-captive, who lived with the Seneca Indians. Be sure to visit it when you come to the park. :o)
