2001
While I will always remember the 2001 race for personal reasons--see the next paragraph for details on the men's team race--there were aspects of the 19th edition that were much more significant historically. Julianne Littman recorded the second-fastest women's time ever in scoring her second Alumni Race victory; more impressive, it marked her record seventh straight top-10 finish (and sixth straight top-3). In the first seven races for which she was eligible, she did not finish lower than fourth. Her impressive display led the Lady Crusaders to their record-breaking third straight team title. Tappan Zee legend Art Gunther also turned in a record-setting performance; his fifth title broke Rita Keahon's all-gender record of four Alumni victories.
As for the men's team race: the sting of the previous year's loss did not wear off quickly, and the fact that we had been involved in the best two-team race in Alumni history did little to soften the blow. Suffice it to say we approached the 2001 race with a score to settle with our Southern rivals. The racing was tight up front, but for once it was actually our team with the superior depth, and we had our second win in three years, and North's third overall.
