1995
Though none of us knew it at the time, 1994 had marked the end of the most powerful dynasty in Alumni Run history. Between 1985 and 1994, the Albertus Magnus men had won 8 of 10 race titles, finished second once, and finished third once. Having raced against them during the last two of their wins in my first two Alumni races, their dominance was all I knew. But 1995 would mark the beginning of a new dynasty. The Suffern men would reign over the Alumni field for the next three years in such dominating fashion that Albertus became something of an afterthought.
It is worth noting, though, that were it not for the Mounties' sudden arrival, Albertus would probably have won another two or three championships. The basic core of Kempton, Buckheit, Crowley, Chambers, and Beckerle really hadn't lost a step. But during the three-year span from 1995-1997, Suffern was as close to unbeatable as a team could be.
The women's race would see another dynasty of sorts emerge as well, as Clarkstown South won the first of two straight titles and the second of five straight top two appearances. Pearl River, the first women's champion and owner of four women's titles, also saw their reign come to an end in 1994.
From an individual standpoint, the racing has never been better. The men's top three of John Trautmann, Art Gunther, and Jamie Kempton is possibly the most decorated trio in race history. Trautmann's 14:36, coming one year after his course record run, equalled George Buckheit's 1985 winning time as the second-fastest in race history. Thirteen runners broke the 16-minute barrier. Defending women's champion Linda Scheu took seven seconds off her winning time from 1994 and lost by over a minute, as former Ramapo/Villanova star and Olympic Trials finalist Debbie Grant Marshall demolished the course record by 38 seconds with her 17:03. Three other women broke 19:00.
