The Teutonic was launched on January 19, 1889 and delivered in July 1889. She was designed by the Hon. A. H. Carlisle, who was also responsible for Olympic and Titanic. She attended the Spithead Naval Review as the first armed merchant cruiser where she was inspected by the Kaiser and the Prince of Wales. She made her maiden voyage on August 7, 1889 from Liverpool to New York via Queenstown. In August 1890 she took the westbound record in 5 days, 19 hours, 5 minutes, then 5 days, 16 hours, 31 minutes at 20.35 kn. In 1897 the Teutonic took part in the Diamond Jubilee Naval Review at Spithead. In 1898 she collided at New York with the US Transport Berlin. In 1907 her sailings were transferred to Southampton. In 1913 her masts were reduced to two, and first class was discontinued. On September 20, 1914 she became and armed merchant cruiser in the 10th Cruiser Squadron. During 1918 she served as a troopship on the UK-Egypt service. In 1921 the Teutonic was laid up in Cowes Roads. She was then sold and broken up at Emden, Germany.
