Ebba Louise Wins Director’s Award
Dress rehearsal on a cold Friday night in late January. Eighteen songs to rehearse, five mics to test, dozens of marks to hit. It had been a long week and seemed to be getting longer. Nobody saw her leave the fold, but they certainly saw her reappear- bobbing and weaving, gliding and grinning, this gypsy woman. There she was, the “lively hora” we were singing about.

Photo of Ebba Louise Atwood No one can break the tension like Ebba Louise- just call me Louise- Atwood. Sometimes she’s a gypsy, sometimes she an impassioned Ms. Piggy a-courting her Kermit as the rest of us sing “The Rainbow Connection,” but most times she is the no-nonsense backbone of SisterSound.

Under that layered gypsy swish and that snouted visage, who is she really, this recipient of the Director’s Award? Louise Atwood is crème brulee, sort of crusty and burnt on the outside while delicate and flavorful within. She is the sort of person to build an organization around, having been a board member, President-Elect and President of SisterSound. She pushed to diversify choral membership during her tenure in official leadership, to develop a higher level of showmanship during performances, and to pursue more and more difficult pieces of music. She was persistent and single-minded in her desire for excellence. Yet, on the other hand…

She kept that center soft. Louise is an artist. “There was music in [her] mother’s house.” From the time of her birth, she was surrounded by classical music, piano lessons, flute-o-phone instruction, choral singing, dance classes and acting experiences. She learned to take the stage and perform, playing her mother in a musical written by her aunt, also her elementary school music teacher. Stage lights, choral music and dancing are in her DNA. And so is a very dry wit, another family heirloom. Clever, crusty comebacks are her forte- but come wrapped around that soft, sweet center.

Louise is the most recent Director’s Award winner, perhaps to honor the culmination of seven years of service to SisterSound. More likely,
