"TRUE WORSHIP"

""Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve --Jesus (Matt. 4:10)

Worship is the expression of the adoration of one's heart. "it is used ....a. of homage shown to men of superior rank; .... b. of homage rendered to God and the ascended Christ, to heavenly beings, and to demons...' (Thayer).

"The worship of God is nowhere defined in Scripture..... it is not confined to praise; broadly it may be regarded as the direct acknowledgment to God, of his nature, attributes, ways and claims, whether by the outgoing of the heart in praise and thanksgiving or by deeds done in such acknowledgment." (W.E. Vine).

Both biblical and secular history of man reveal that men are inclined to worship someone or some thing. Through the centuries men have made gods liken to birds, beasts or themselves and bowed down to them; or they have worshiped the sun, moon and stars. In fact, God knew the beauty and magnificence of such and warned Israel, "take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars. all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them..' (Deut. 4:19), and commanded that they should not worship other gods.

We are the "offspring of God" (Acts 17:29), He is the Father of spirits" (Heb.12:9), and justly due all praise, honor and glory that we can offer unto Him. While, as Mr. Vine stated, "the worship of God is nowhere defined in Scripture," worship of God is taught in the Scripture and we would do well to learn what He has taught. In the revelation from God to man He has taught men how to worship Him. To worship in anyway not taught in His word is to be presumptuous. How can we know that God will he pleased with our worship if He has not told us that such worship pleases Him?

To the woman at the well Jesus said, 'Ye worship ye know not what.. ' (John 4:22), so all worship does not please Him. There is a worship that is vain, for Jesus said to some of the Jews of his generation, "In vain ye do worship me, teaching for doctrine the commandments of men' (Matt. 15:9). One may worship the true God but do so in ignorance (Acts 17:23) and one could be insincere in his worship. All acceptable worship must be offered unto the true and living God. Men may worship angels, other men, some object fashioned by the hands of men (images), or creatures of this world, but all such worship will be in vain in so far as God is concerned.

Jesus taught about true worship, when to the woman at the well he said, 'God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth' (John 4:24).

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. --Jesus (John 4:23,24).

When on the isle of Patmos, John fell at the feet of the angel, John said the angel said to me, 'See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.' (Rev. 22:9).

May we realize, as did the innumerable host of angels, who said with a loud voice: 'Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. ' And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, 'Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. ' And the four beats said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshiped him that liveth for ever and ever. (Revelation 5:12,13).
