By Editor Bob(cl_kaulana)

As near as I can recall, it was around April or May 1999 that I began handing out Vienna Awards. In March 2000, circumstances dictated that I give that honor to another Vienna community leader who has shown an interest in the position, CL Marg (clmu64u). Now she has had to give the honor of the Award over to her Evaluating Vienna compadre, Bill the PinWiz.

History

A long time ago (approximately 1996) in a database far, far away, the entity once known as GeoPages, then GeoCities, and finally Yahoo!GeoCities began a program of featuring certain pages that both adhered to neighborhood themes and guidelines and also provided "something extra" for surfers to enjoy. The program was called the Featured Page program. At first, community leaders had no say in who became a featured homesteader. The way things went: you applied to the GeoCities top brass to become "featured," and then you waited.

John Batzer Jr. (Bassist) was the only Vienna Community Leader through much of this phase. Since he felt many more sites deserved to be featured than were actually being featured, he created the Vienna Award. When a homesteader came to him saying that his or her site was rejected as featured, John would take a look at it, and if he thought it deserved an award, he would give the site the Vienna Award. Eventually, the Vienna Award became a predecessor to applying for Featured Page status.

The Featured Page program was abandoned by GeoCities in March or April 1998, but the Vienna Award has continued to denote those sites in Vienna which would be ranked as "featured" in the eyes of the community leaders.

Sometime in late 1998, a strange silence met with applications for the Vienna Award. Several months later, in 1999, CLs were shocked to learn that John had been in a car accident involving a drunk driver. After hospitalization and operations to restore the use of his wrist, hands, and fingers, John decided he could no longer keep up with the demands of the award and offered it to the CLs. Having already shown my interest in the award almost a year previously, I renewed my offer to take over the award. John offered it to me and after careful consideration I took up the mantle in May 1999 and brought the award to its current resting place, within Vienna Online.

Sometime in 2000, two fellow CLs took a leadership role in the administering of the Vienna Award, mu64u and pinwiz. mu64u has had to relinquish her part for the time being, but Bill the PinWiz is continuing. Email him at pinwiz@oocities.com.

Winners of this award are eligible to apply for the Vanguard Award.
