HAI ZHENG, CELLIST


Hai Zheng has recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra and appeared and recorded with the Amatius Orchestra of New York at Lincoln Center. She has also appeared with orchestras in Europe, North America, and the Orient. She made her European Debut with the city of Oxford Symphony Orchestra at the Oxford Town Hall in England in 1986, and her New York Debut at the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall in 1989, concerts that were highly acclaimed by the critics of both the Oxford Daily Mail and the New York Times.

Ms. Zheng has recieved many important awards, prizes, and scholarships, including the prize of the Feuermann/Shapleigh International Cello Solo Competition, Ms. Giles Centennial award, Presidential Award of the University of Texas, Excellent Performance award from the Tcherepnin Society, Honorary Citizen Award by the Governor of Texas and scholarships from the Mozarteum Festival in Salzburd, Austria.

Ms. Zheng has soloed over major television and radio networks on three continents. She was the first woman Chineese Cellist to be invited to the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Last summer she was a guest artist at the Casals Festival in Switzerland. Her performances were heard and praised by Mme. Tortelier, Mr. Yo Yo Ma, Gendron, Parisot, Van Cliburn, Mme. Feuermann, Mme. Tcherepnin, Sang Tong and Robert Shaw.

Hai Zheng was born in Shanghai of parents who are both distinguished medical doctors. Ki-Ling Lui was her first teacher. She graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Music with Prof. Xia and studied in Shanghai conservatory with Prof. Chen. She completed her Master of Music Degree with Prof. Paul Olefsky to whom she has been assistant at the University of Texas-Austin since 1987. Ms. Zheng was presented with the prestigious Amati Cello, circa 1580 (Known as the King Charles IX) for use in her career. She was invited to perform and give Master Classes at the 1990 Hong Kong International Summer Festival.
