DOUGLAS HARVEY, CELLIST



Douglas Harvey is a seventeen-year-old cellist from San Antonio, Texas. Since the start of his musical endeavors at age 9, he has won first place awards with the Alamo Heights Friends of Strings seven times, and has been the recipient of a scholarship from the Colburn Pledge Music Foundation five times. Douglas has been the First Place winner of the Southwestern University Concerto Competition, the Corpus Christi International Young Artist's Competition, and the Idyllwild, California, International Young Artist's Competition. He has performed as soloist with such orchestras as, the San Antonio Symphony, the International Chamber Orchestra, the Southwestern University Orchestra, The Youth Philharmonic of San Antonio, and the Alamo Heights Sinfonietta. Douglas was also the winner of the Solo Bach Prize in Corpus Christi, and was invited to perform in Master Class at the Leonard Rose Festival.

Douglas has participated in Master Classes and Coachings with such artists as: Nathaniel Rosen, Frans Helmerson, Sharon Robinson, Jamie Laredo, Norman Fischer, Andres Diaz, Elenore Schoenfeld, Eric Rosenblith, Joel Krosnick, Sofie Feuermann, and others. He has spent his summers at the institutions of Greenwood, Interlochen, Tanglewood, and the Manchester Music Festival. He recently auditioned, and was accepted into the cello section of the Austin Symphony. Douglas began his cello studies as a fourth grader in the school program. He soon started private lessons with Mrs. Annette DiGiosia, cellist with the San Antonio Symphony, and studied with her for four years. His current teacher is Professor Paul Olefsky of the School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. Douglas plays on a contemporary instrument made by Bronek Cison of the William Harris Lee Shop in Chicago, 1993.
