Denton Alumnae Chapter History

The Denton Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota was chartered on December 5, 1959. Charter members were: Ann Barnett, * Evelyn Cuthbert, Jan Ebersole, * Matilde Gardner, Ruth Gibson, Winette Hargrove, Marilyn Haynie, Anna Harriet Heyer, Barbara Kelton, Lee McCray, Marilyn McKinley, Jean Mainous, Patricia Morey, Velma Selby, and Shirley Sheets.

The Alumnae Chapter has always sought to work closely with the local university chapters, helping them with rush affairs and joint musicales.

Since 1961 a Benefit Musicale has been held annually with the proceeds going to maintain four awards going to local university students. The Marjorie Fulton Award is given to a strings student at the University of North Texas in memory of an outstanding violinist who was a faculty member there and also an honorary SAI. Following auditions, an award is given annually to a member of Iota Theta Chapter and another to Iota Omega Chapter. The fourth award goes to a composition student at UNT and the winning composition is performed in a public concert by one of the ensembles of the school. Proceeds from the Benefit Musicale also go to SAI Philanthropies, the International Music Fund, and other local projects.

The following artists have performed on Benefit Musicales throughout the years: * Marjorie Fulton, Dale and Juanita Peters, Margaret Kalil, Carroll Glenn, Michael Avsharian, Dorothea Brown, Charles and Grace Kleinsteuber, Monte Hill Davis, Joan Wall, Mary Nan Mailman, Jean Mainous, Tosca Kramer, Katherine and William Race, Eugene Conley, Richard Cass, Norma Davidson, Charles Brown, Jack Roberts, Jeannine Crater, Jonathan Woods, Charles Nelson, Robert Davidovici, Larry Walz, Stephen and Anna Farish, Debra Richtmeyer-Truax, David Yeomans, Delia Benton, Christopher Adkins, Mary Karen Clardy, and Adam Wodnicki.
