As winter nights came, the men marched. For those who seemed not to know their left & right feet apart the story goes they were told to put hay in one foot and straw in the other so the call would come, "HAYFOOT!, STRAWFOOT!".
On the march a side drummer would beat a rattling good pace and occasionally the men would sing orange songs.
