 | "TORREY CANYON"____ The final 3 losses in this series show the tanker disasters that have had the most profound effect on changing laws and attitudes to marine oil spill incidents. The TORREY CANYON which broke up in 1967 off the Scilly Isles (U.K.) causing massive local pollution led to the creation of the Civil Liability Convention (CLC) in 1969 and the Fund Convention (1992). For the first time, shipowners became strictly liable, rather than liable only through proven negligence. Hans Van der Aar was working for the attempted salvors (Wijsmuller) at the time and has written a full account of the salvage attempt on his website at HOLLAND'S GLORY, which those interested in this loss should visit.
