As Goku grew up, he learned of his true identity-he was of one of the mighty Saiya-Jin warriors-one of only four left in existence. He also learned that his tail was the secret of his extreme power and his means of transforming at the full of the moon. He did not keep his tail, however, as Kamesennin yanked it off after he transformed and went berserk when he was younger. At the full of the moon, Saiya-jin that have tails transform into Oozaru. Oozaru are "were monkey" type monsters that are very big, very powerful, ad VERY mean. When the Saiya-jin become Oozaru, they seem to lose all mental awareness and simply destroy everything in sight. We learn later, however, that this is only due to a lack of training in that form. Vegeta trained in that form, and consequently, he has complete control while in this form- he can even talk.

Goku loves to train. He trains like a maniac knowing that it will only make him that much stronger.He also has a heart of gold. He will kindly lend a helping hand to anybody-including his enemies. Goku learns new techniques very rapidly, and knowledge plus Saiya-jin bloodlines equal a war machine- which is exactly what goku is in battle. Being the most powerful man in the world is no easy task. He is always fighting to save others and himself from the dangers of the universe. He is somewhat naive, (okay, very naive) but hey, he grew up in the wilderness, alone after his grandfather died.
