VIII. Armor

The armor on the MS-14 is a low-mass lunarium tungsten composite plating that is the standard for most Tirolian mecha. Aside from the good protection provided against projectiles, missiles, and other kinetic weapons, this armor is also resistant to plasma globes (annihilation discs), lasers, and fair against, particle guns too, owing to the fact that the armor can flake off and evaporate in layers under fire from such high-energy weapons, taking much of the weapon's energy and converting it into the latent heat of sublimation in the armor. The armor stops all small arms fire, and has good resistance to all weapons commonly mounted on combat mecha.

The Gelgoog provides full protection from nuclear, biological, and chemical hazards, using an overpressure cockpit environment activated by radiation and hazardous chemical sensors, or manually when biological warfare conditions are anticipated. The internal consumables supplies can provide atmosphere for three days maximum.

IX. Development

Following the discovery of tachyon weaponry in late 2046, Tirolian engineers began the process of attempting to miniaturize it to be able to be used by mecha in the field, rather than just by capital ships.  Together with Terran engineers, they developed the tachyon beam rifle in early 2048.  Despite the miniaturization, the power demands were still far in excess of any available powerplant.  Instead of a costly redesign for all mobile suits, it was decided that a new mobile suit would be designed and built expressly for the tachyon weapon systems which had already begun to yield variations such as the tachyon saber developed by the Terrans.

In mid 2048, Zeonic began development of the MS-14 Gelgoog Mobile Suit as a design to be issued to unit commanders and special forces units in the field.  The MS-14 not only featured far superior weaponry than her predecessors, but also far superior performance both in space and on the ground.  By August of 2049, the Zeonic engineers delivered the first MS-14, the MS-14B.  This version served more as a proof of concept version than a full combat version.  Still it outperformed any suit of the day, even the RGM-78 Gundam.   The MS-14B carried no internal armaments using the external tachyon rifle and beam saber as its only weapons along with a set of optional missile launchers.  Although it could use any weapon in the Tirolian arsenal, the only other commonly used version was a missile launcher similar to those used on the MS-09 Dom designed for the Gelgoog.  The beam saber is worth nothing as it is not a single blade, but a dual blade making it a deadly weapon especially  when the Gelgoog is faced with multiple opponents.

Zeonic engineers went ahead and developed the MS-14C Gelgoog cannon which sacrificed performance for firepower.  The MS-14C is basically a MS-14B with a modified backpack to which a large heavy tachyon cannon on the right shoulder.  While the -14C proved to be effective against its primary targets, capital ships, it was hampered by limited ammo making them of limited use in prolonged firefights.

In 2052 Zeonic engineers gave the Gelgoog a needed upgrade.  Increasing the number and power of the main thrusters gave the MS-14J Gelgoog Jaeger, as it came to be known, unparalleled maneuverability for its day.  In addition enhanced maneuverability, the MS-14J also featured new weapons.  First was the inclusion of a 110mm autocannons in each forearm giving the Gelgoog increased close combat performance.  The main upgrade came in the form of a new tachyon rifle often called a tachyon machinegun.  This rifle, while firing less powerful bursts, does so at a higher rate of fire and with greater accuracy.  Together these factors make the MS-14J Gelgoog one of the most revered mecha designs of its day.

While the MS-14 saw very little combat, it did face off against its counterparts in the RDF on numerous occasions during war games and such exercises and while the RDF could beat the MS-14, it was not often done.  The MS-14 was the best of the early mobile suits and would continue to serve with the Tirolian Republican Guard until 2057 when the last one was replaced by the newer MS-15 Qubeley
