In 1991, artist/writer Yukito Kishiro wrote and illustrated a series of stories about a young female cyborg named Gally and her journey of self-discovery. This series was entitled GUNNM, translated as "Gun Dream", and was published in the Shueisha publication "Business Jump". This series was translated and adapted by Viz Communications Inc. and released to the American audience as "Battle Angel Alita". GUNNM has already ended its run in Japan, but "Battle Angel Alita" is still being published, although it too is nearing its final volume. Two subsequent series, "Haisha" and "Gunnm Gaiden". "Haisha" dealt primarily with Motorball and its short run has already ended. "Gunnm Gaiden" is evidently a prequel to GUNNM, but there is little information available currently. After GUNNM concluded its run, a special issue of "Business Jump Extra" called the Guncyclopedia was published. Also of note, A GUNNM novel was written by Yukito Kishiro and Kawamura Yasuhisa and published by Jump Books. In 1993, a two-part anime also called GUNNM was made and then released in the United States as "Battle Angel".
