Hurricane Georges hits Puerto Rico

Packing winds of 115 mph and gusts as high as 175 mph, Hurricane Georges roared across Puerto Rico late Monday 21 September and early Tuesday 22 September 1998, toppling trees and power lines, tearing roofs off buildings, grounding yachts, and blanketing large sections of the island in darkness. At least six people were killed on Puerto Rico.  About three million people on Puerto Rico were left without power and water. President Clinton declared Puerto Rico a disaster area.

In Puerto Rico after the tragic hurricane, residents found buildings flattened, trees and power lines down, shattered glass strewn across the land, and large pools of standing water. More than 20,000 people spent the night in shelters, concerned their homes would not survive the storm. And some apparently were correct. A lot of people are now homeless without any water, food and clothes
