Mexico vacation pictures

October 1999

Here's a view from my hotel.

And another view from my hotel.

This is a courtyard near my room.

Here's a mini-golf course at the hotel.

I took a kayak tour of the wild Mexican jungle! Here you can see my native guide.

A scene at the market.

This is Kukulcan Pyramid. It's also known as "El Castillo."

Here's my friend Nanci who I met in Mexico. She's from PA and we've remained friends since the trip. She was staying at the same hotel as I. We climbed the pyramid.

The Temple of the Warriors seen from the top of Kukulcan.

In the distance is the great Ball Court. The Mayans played some sort of team sport in this area. Supposedly, to be assured a quick and honorable ticket to the afterlife, the leader of the winning team was decapitated. I think a trophy would have sufficed.

Looking at this carving, one would think that Mayan men had extremely large penises. I don't believe it -- I think it's just a phallacy.

Here's a sinkhole that Nanci and I visited. This whole area was below ground. You can almost see the opening in the upper left side of the photo.

Here's Nanci again swimming in the sinkhole.

This is Maria. Unfortunately, I met her shortly before the end of my trip, so I didn't spend much time with her. She is the only 17 year old widow I've ever met. Her husband got shot in the head. I thought this picture looked better in black and white.

Some more scenes at the hotel.

This is a beach that was closer to the center of Cancun.
