More on Colors

 Clouds, sky, ocean, stones, flowers, birds and fishes were carefully observed by the ancient Hawaiians, and thus qualifying adjectives to describe them were coined.

BLACK

`ele`ele

Black, dark, the black color of Hawaiian eyes; to blacken, become dark; darkly. Ke hele `ele`ele nei au ( I walk in darkness).

`ele`ele pa`a

Coal-black.

hiwa

Entirely black, as of pigs offered to the gods, a desirable blackness in contrast with uli and `ele`ele which have pejorative connotations; black kapa.

hiwa pa`a

Coal-black, entirely black, solid-black.

lipo

Deep blue-black, as a cavern, the sea, or dense forest.

pano

Dark, as clouds; obscure, shiny-black, as a fathomless depth; deep blue-black, as ocean depths. A saying: He pano ke ali`i, he weo ka kanaka, the chief is obscure, the commoner is obvious.

panopano

A darkness, a dark darkness. `Ele`ele Hilo ê, ho`opanopano i ka ua, Hilo is black, darkened in the rain.

pano pa`u

Glossy, glistening black, sooty-black; black streaks in grain of wood.

pô`ele, pô`ele`ele

Black, dark; black of the middle of the night, dark blue. Fig., ignorant, benighted. Aloha pô`ele`ele! (Good night!)

Resplendent, shiny black.

pouli

Dark; darkness, dark night. Eclipse.

uli

Any dark color, including the dark of black clouds, deep blue of the sea, the ordinary green of vegetation; the black-and-blue of a bruise.

Dark-cloud black, Cerulean blue, vegetation green.

wehi

Blackness; a deep dark color. Ka`û malo `eka, kua wehi, Ka`û of dirty malo and black back, due to working in the sun.

BLUE

`ainakini

Navy blue cotton cloth; blue drab.

hâuli

The deep blue sky; dark, swarthy; dark clouds.

lipo

Deep blue-black, as a cavern, the sea, or dense forest.

Black, deep blue. Ka moana nui lipolipo, the great blue ocean. Ka uliuli o nâ lau nâhelehele, the deep green of the forest leaves.

pano

`ula `ula

Brown, as in kâma`a `ili `ula`ula, brown shoes and kôpa`a `ula`ula, brown sugar.

 

GRAY

Gray, as the head of an older man, he`e po`o `ahina; white-haired. Also, blue denim cloth, dungarees, blue jeans.

Slate gray, gray, very light blue.

Ash gray pallor.

hâwena

Hoariness; the whitishness of gray hair.

hina

Gray, hoary, as in hair.

Gray, grayish.

ma`oha

Grayish, when contrasted with black, as gray hair.

Gray-haired, ash colored.

 

GREEN

Green, greenness.

`ôma`oma`o

To be green or to appear green, as vegetation.

Deep green of the sea from afar.

Vegetation green, Cerulean blue, dark-cloud black.

 

PINK

Pink. Also, two raspberries and thimbleberry.

Rose, rosy. From the English, rose.

Purple, any purplish color; a color associated with the first glimmer of dawn; also, a variety of sweet potato; mixture of colors; light, indistinct shades of color in cloth.

purplish-blue, as the sea; blue as the sky above on a clear day; dark, as a bruise.

purple, red, reddish-brown.

`ula `ahiahia

faded red, i.e., purple.

 

RED

Reddish brown or sandy, as hair.

To be a little red.

Red, as the `ôhelo berry.

Reddish brown, red, the color of smoked fish.

Reddish, as meat half-cooked.

BRIGHTNESS

`a`ai

Bright, vivid as with contrasting colors. `A`ai ka lei hulu melemele i ka holokû `ele`ele, a yellow feather lei appears brighter on a black Mother Hubbard.

Bright, shiny, as applied to clouds.

  

DARKNESSES

a`ea`e

Dark, obscure, as a vision; to assume a softer, darker shade; to mix a dark or glistening color with a lighter one.

`ele`ele

Darkly; dark-colored, black.

hâ`uli

Dark, swarthy; dark clouds; deep blue sky.

lolohumea

Appearance of the verge of the ocean to one in a canoe. It seems green or just dark-colored.

Any dark color; dark brown.

kikokiko

Spotted; speckled in different colors, as a pig; striped.

kuhe

A change of color in the skin--purple, blue, brown, etc--as a consequence of being long in the water.

mâ`awe`awe

Spotted, variegated colors.

mâ`oki`oki

Spotted, having different colors. Kona is noted for its streaked sea or currents in the ocean.

`ônio, `ôni`oni`o

Spotted, streaked with various colors; to spot or print with colors, as kapa.

`ôpulepule

Spotted; light and shade.

pâni`oni`o

Variegated, of different colors; to print a kapa in gaudy colors.

pikapika, pikopiko

Variegated, spotted, usually applied to the smooth surface of the ocean in a calm.

pulepule

Spotted, speckled, of different colors.
