Gardening . . . in clay and rock!

We live at the crest of a ridge in the East Brainerd section of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The soil here is a relentless red clay punctuated with rocks. Cultivating a garden here is difficult first of all because you must remove rocks and amend the soil with organic material to even get started. Then our hot summers often with drought conditions makes it almost impossible to keep treasured plants alive. Now that I've told you the worst, here are some prizes from '97.

Asiatic and Oriental lillies adorn the front yard near the curb of our cul-de-sac.

More lillies tower above the Missouri primroses around our mailbox.

A Springtime treat is this salmon Azalea that I have transplanted all over the yard till finally finding this spot it loves.

Sheila was not too crazy about these Mahonias when I planted them, but they have definitely grown on her.

I love these Peacock Orchids .. so easy to grow and they bloom most of the summer here.

What a beauty this Spirea was in mid-Spring!

Visitors marveled at this Trumpet lilly, blooming for the first time.
