This is a very crude attempt to provide you with information on the new trend in Hindi Music. I am still trying to finish this section. I am hopeing to put up some sample files and also include some pictures very soon. Well anyway here is what I have on the subject so far. Enjoy!
Arre yaar what the hell is Hinglish??? To me Hinglish is a new language although it basically is a "Masala" of two languages - Hindi and English. People say that it evolved in the late 80s due to the introduction satellite television in India. I tend to disagree - I think that it always existed (well since English was introduced in India anyway). I certainly remember speaking in Hinglish way back in the 70s. You probably asking - What the hell has it got to do with Hindi Pop Music??.
When I refer to Hindi Pop Music I am also referring to Hindi Rap, Rock and recently Jungle. Basically the lyrics that are used in this new trend of Hindi Music is in Hinglish. Listen to any Hindi pop cassette/CD by any artist and you will find that lyrics are all almost exclusively Hinglish.
I don't calm that everything (or anything) on this page is true - its all based on my past experience, so I will leave it to your judgement. This modern trend in Hindi Music had its origins in 70s, it basically started off as Disco (firstly in films and then with individual artists releasing their own albums). I will not go into filimi music as there are other sources which provide more detailed and accurate information on the matter.
In the early days only a handful of album were released. Mainly by artists who were already well established in the film business. Some of whom include people like Bappi Lahari, Babla and Runna Laila. But in the 1980s a new breed of artists emerged - some of whom were also from the film industry but most them were solo artist making their debut through Hindi Disco/Pop music. In the 80s the music was still mostly Disco orientated and Pop was just on the horizon. The artist of these days included Usha Uttap, Alisha Chinoy, Vijay Benedict, Sapna Mukherjee, Amit Kumar, Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamoorty. Most of these artists are established singers in the films. The music of these days was in my opinion still of low standard - its just did not have many takers. The music although tried to be different - still had a very filmi touch to it. But the 1990s was to change all this.
The seeds of the modern Hindi music which were planted in 80s were starting to bear fruits of success in the 90s. This was perhaps helped by the satellite revolution that taking place in India at that time. Many of the artists had the opportunity to show off their talents - many of them become a household names when it come to modern Hindi music. Names like Baba Sehgal, Shweta Shetty, Suneeta Rao, Suchitra Krishnamoorty, Sagarika Mukerjee, Shantanu Mukerjee (or Shaan as he is known), Stylebhai (Jay Menon), Puyush Soni are certainly popular with almost everyone. Also it gave a second life to artists like Alisha, Vijay and Sapna. There are numerous others who have made an attempt to reach stardom but still have not found acceptance yet.
The birth of modern Hindi music as we know it today was in the form of Disco, it then evolved into Pop. As time went by Hindi Rap, Rock and currently Jungle is the latest stage of the modern Hindi Music. Who knows what the next phase of the Hindi will be? .
