It was late May 1998, just a few days after Vanessa Dorman has been replaced with Kam Heskin, most of the crew had gathered at The Richards Set and were ready to film Kam's very first scene in which she walks down those stairs and goes face to face with Annie Douglas, the wicked bitch of the west. Our hidding camera crew quietly snuck onto the set and hid behind some old props and we let our camera's started rolling.
Annie sat in the family's living room talking to herself about her latest scheme when she saw a blonde haired woman walk down the stairs, Caitlin Richards. Caitlin pauses for a minute and you hear a voice fill the room "The Role of Caitlin Richards will now be played by Kam Heskin", Caitlin continues to walk down the stairs and goes face to face with Annie and about to say her a big opening line when suddenly Spike comes dashing around the corner of the set and knocks over one of the walls causing the set to collapse.
Our camera crew caught the whole thing on tape, and the camera continued to role as the clean up crew restored the set and everyone was set back into place for take two. Apparently the animal crew forgot to lock up Spike's cage and he darted across the set once again but this time he was carrying a baby Trey doll in his mouth and started to chew it up on the set, the animal crew trained to catch him but he darted up the stairs thinking he was leading Olivia to a Gregory sleeping with Annie.
Spike continued to race across the set of the Richards Home and found an opening doorway in Cole and Caitlin's room and made his way into Surf Central, where Casey and Michael were having a serious talk, of course the camera crew didn't notice Spike sneak in through the backway and snag one of the curtains off the window, which took off the entire wall in the Surf Central Kitchen.
Casey and Michael began to scream as they saw the wall go flying by their feet, but the producers were in horror as they saw Spike darting towards the set of the Cabin where Ben and Meg were. They tried to warn the Cabin Set but apparently they were already in progress of filming the scene when Meg is about to eat Derek's poisoned soup.
Meg is slowly lifting the spoon towards her mouth and Derek is watching anxiously to see Meg die of rat poisoning. But before Meg is supposed to pull her stunt when she purposely spill the soup, the surf central wall comes smashing the locked window that Meg tried to escape through not once but twice. Meg is about to get cracked off on the head with a piece of fallen debris when suddenly Derek jumps up and pushes Meg out of the way from a large piece of wood, the camera men halt filming and the director screams "That wasn't in the script!!!"
Spike realizes that he has caused so much havok that he tries to run away and go hide by the pier, but he doesn't get too far, after being tipped by one of our camera men Olivia finds Spike wandering the sands of Sunset Beach alone in search for a perfect hiding spot so he wouldn't get in trouble, Olivia brought Spike back to The Richards Kingdom and gave him back to Gregory where they had their very touching reunion scene.
Our camera crew caught it all on tape, and as they walked out of the set with a tear on their eyes after seeing that emotional reunion scene, they said to themselves "Spike is truly a man's best friend." After restoring the set, the crew went back and finished filming some truly great Sunset Beach scenes, and as for Spike, He and Gregory shall go onto larger things.
