Mr White Goes To Westminster

Christmas comes but once a year, and with it comes a certain amount of televisual treats (not many, mind you, but there are a few jewels). Aside from the first ever Crimble episode of BallyK, there was Mr White Goes To Westminster. Transmitted on 30.12.97, it starred Dervla along with Bill Patterson, Robert Duncan (of Drop the Dead Donkey fame) and Celia Imrie.

It was a fictional (ha!) account of a former TV journalist who decides to battle against sleaze in the government and stand in the general election. Dervla's role was of the wonderfully named Pam 'the Ferret' Roberts, a journalist who earns her nickname from ferreting out news (not getting into men's trousers, Becks!). She decides that she is going to prove that he is not as pure as he claims to be, and she sets about finding the evidence.

Now, this is where Dervla's supreme talent comes into the equation. We know that Pam is a nasty piece of work, who'll con anybody to get the story that she needs, but at several points in the programme we still feel sympathy for her especially when she tells of her abusive father. To be fair, there is no evidence to suggest that this is untrue as it could be an explanation for her behaviour.

Again, this was a good piece of drama, if slightly disappointing. Speaking as someone who only watched the show to see Dervla (and Robert Duncan), and who has no interest in politics whatsoever, I was disappointed to find that the press (and Channel 4) had used her name to promote the show, suggesting that she was in it far more than she actually was. But, it's well worth a look to see her looking like Phoebe again and to hear her best accent to date (middle class London which I could not fault).
