S. 1193 Safe Air Travel for Animals Act

Sponsor: Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)

Purpose: To improve the safety of animals transported on aircraft by establishing policies and procedures for transporting animals and requiring airlines to submit annual reports on incidents involving animals during air transport.

Status: Referred to Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Action: SUPPORT. Write your two senators and ask that they support S. 1193. Tell your senators that as many as 5,000 animals per year are lost, injured, or killed while under the care of airlines. Many animals are currently dying as a result of suffocation, heat prostration, and exposure, as well as from mishandling by baggage personnel. Mention that the bill ensures that all airline cargo holds carrying animals are equipped with ventilation and heating and cooling systems and will require that employees are trained in proper handling techniques.

Sample Letter Urging Support of S. 1197

I am writing to urge you to support S. 1197 to ban imports and sales in interstate commerce of products made with dog and cat fur.

The Humane Society of the United States documented the trade in dog and cat fur in a 16-month investigation. The investigators estimated that 2 million dogs and cats are slaughtered, internationally, for their fur every year. They also found that dog and cat fur is dyed and manipulated to resemble fur from wild animals. Therefore, consumers may be unknowingly purchasing dog and cat fur.

Americans consider dogs and cats to be members of their families and find it appalling that these animals are being cruelly slaughtered for their fur. I urge you to support and co-sponsor S. 1197 to help end the slaughter of these 2 million dogs and cats as well as protect American consumers from unknowingly purchasing dog and cat fur.

I look forward to receiving a response from you regarding this important issue.

Sincerely,
