"The Visit"

by Sara

Five years later,
To the day,
She showed at his door,
Just to say "Hey."

She could have called,
She could have written,
But instead she took a plane
All the way to Crabapple Cove, Maine.

He and his father
Welcomed her into their home.
What should they have done?
Left her to stand in the cold
Wind and rain?

It was getting late,
So she stood to go.
"Where will you stay?"
Hawkeye had questioned.

"I'll find some where."
"Oh, no, you will not.
You're to stay here. As long
As you want."

He had a look
On his face.
One she read,
Like the cover of a book.

The look dared her to stay.
"Alright. But, only one day."
Then, he realized,
That the spare room
Was a cluttered mess
Also, as dark as a tomb.

His dad had left;
Knowing his son would convince her to stay;
To clean out the room for her few-day stay.

Two days later,
After all were in bed,
A lightbulb went off over his head..
He would propose the very next evening,
Knowing that soon she would be leaving.

He got down on one knee
And said,
"Margaret, please marry me."
She was shocked. Speechless.
She knew not what to say.

Words had left her,
But she knew,
A kiss surely would do.

Almost a month later,
They exchanged vows
And were together.
Forever.
And that, my friend, is just the beginning.
Yet, still the very end.
