An Alternate Ending to "Stars and Strips"

By Beth Mott

(This is just a little idea that came into my head after re-watching this episode a couple of times - This was another episode with good interaction between Hawkeye and Margaret!! Anyway, its a one shot, one draft story, so don't expect any prize winning material!!)

*** This story picks up after Scully leaves, but before Margaret runs into Hawkeye in the Officer's Club. It's just a little adjustment that I thought would be interesting to see. ***

After Scully leaves her tent, Margaret sits down on the edge of her cot and sighs.

'Why are men such louses?' She wonders to herself. Smoothing the front of her fancy dress she sighs. "So much for getting dressed up for him." She reached back to undo the zipper when someone suddenly knocked on her door. "Come in." She called, fixing the zipper and smoothing the dress.

The door opens to reveal Hawkeye, dressed in his bathrobe, a board game under his arm. As he entered the tent he said warmly. "Margaret, I was wondering if you'd be interested in joining me..." He stopped when he saw the way she was dressed. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you had other plans. I saw Scully leave and I assume...oh, never mind. Excuse me." He turned to leave.

"No, wait Hawk, don't go." She stopped him, placing a hand on his arm to keep him from going. When he turned to look at her she dropped her hands and replied. "Actually, I don't have any plans for this evening, at least not anymore."

"I'm sorry it didn't work out, Margaret." Hawkeye said, sympathy in his tone. "Well, in that case, I was just heading over to the Officer's Club to play a game of double solitaire Scrabble, would you care to join me? B.J. is busy writing a letter to Peg and Charles is torturing everyone with his new record - "The Sounds of a Dying Cow." or something like that."

"No wonder you're running for cover." Margaret laughed in amusement. "I'd love to join you, Hawkeye. Just give me a minute to change out of this...thing." She gestured to the dress she was wearing with a disappointed sigh. She felt a little disappointed that things hadn't worked out as she'd hoped. It felt nice to get dressed up for a change, she was getting tired of the dreary looking army fatigues.

"Actually, you just gave me an idea." Hawkeye commented with a smile. "Don't you change at all. You give me five minutes and we'll head over to the O-Club."

"What are you going to do?" She asked, a puzzled look on her face.

"You'll see." Hawkeye smiled mischievously. "Here, you take this and I'll be back in five minutes." He handed her the board game he was caring and turned to leave. Before exiting he turned back and admonished. "Don't you go anywhere."

Margaret chuckled softly. "I won't." She promised with a gentle smile. Hawkeye returned the smile and then left her tent.

Quickly he darted across the compound and into the Swamp.

"You're back early!" B.J. commented as his friend entered their tent. "Nothing going on at the O-Club?"

"I'm not here to stay." Hawkeye replied, removing his bathrobe and tossing it on his bunk. "Just here to change." He quickly pulled out his tuxedo and tugged on the pants.

"Where are you going dress in that thing?" Charles asked, a disgusted, yet curious tone in his voice.

"For your information I'm going to the Officer's Club." Hawkeye replied, quickly doing up his shirt.

"Kind of dressed up for the Officer's Club, aren't you?" B.J. remarked with an amused smile.

"What's wrong with getting dressed up once in a while?" Hawkeye asked, straightening his tie in the mirror. When he was finished he looked around the tent quickly. "What happened to those trick flowers that Radar used to have? I saw them in here a couple of weeks ago."

B.J. reached up on a shelf behind his bed and picked up a black wand. Handing it to Hawkeye he asked with a knowing smile. "So, who's the lucky nurse?"

Popping the flowers up Hawkeye smiled mysteriously. "What makes you think that this has anything to do with nurse?" He asked innocently.

"Don't tell me that Klinger's dresses have gotten to you, Hawk." B.J. teased with a mischievous laugh.

"If you will pardon me, gentlemen, I have an important engagement to keep." With a nod and a mysterious grin to his bunkmates Hawkeye turned and headed out the door.

"What do you think that he's up to?" B.J. asked Charles after the door closed behind Hawkeye.

"I don't know, and I don't care." Charles replied in a superior tone as he turned his attention back to his book. A moment later he looked at B.J. The two men jumped out of their seats simultaneously and pushed open the door.

"Well I'll be." B.J. whistled softly as he saw where Hawkeye had gone. The two men watched in surprise as Margaret opened the door at Hawkeye's knock. Their jaws dropped even more as they noticed the dress that Margaret was wearing.

Hawkeye pulled the flowers from behind his back and handed them to Margaret. She chuckled in amusement, but accepted them graciously. Offering her his arm he said, "I was wondering if you'd care to accompany me to the Officer's Club for a drink and an exciting game of Double Solitaire Scrabble?"

Margaret smiled as she looped her arm through his. "I'd love to." And then arm and arm they made their way towards the Club, leaving a very surprised B.J. and Charles behind them.
