The Georgians were formed at Quarry Bank High School, Allerton, in 1962, by three students, Laurence [Lol] Ashley, Geoff Jones and Tim Dugdill. No drummer was found from the school, but Mike Sloan was recruited, a friend of Tim's and brother of Frank Sloan, who had been the original drummer with The Merseybeats. They were all studying but Sloan had left school early and was working as a delivery boy for his father's butcher shop.

They began by playing at local Youth Clubs and schools, quickly building up a following particularly among their fellow students at Quarry Bank.

Fans of R & B music from the outset, their enthusiasm was intensified by listening to The Beatles and The Big Three. Early influences were Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson and Chuck Berry, all of whom they were later to play with as support band.

After an approach to Bob Wooler, disc-jockey at the Cavern Club, they began to make (initially unbilled) appearances at the famous venue. To begin with the Georgians were paid expenses only and would play either side of the star band. Strangely enough, whilst most groups came to The Cavern better prepared from other gigs, The Cavern was the groups' training ground. They were playing there long before they were really good enough, but you could not get a much better training ground, nor better groups to watch and emulate than the Georgians found at the club.

Due to their style of music (R&B), which was by no means the norm in Liverpool at that time, the group was selected to play alongside The Roadrunners at Hope Hall, a club formed in the basement of The Everyman Theatre by The Blond family.

The Roadrunners were already playing Thursdays and Sundays, and the Georgians were chosen to augment them by doing Fridays and Saturdays. At that time there was no dance floor extension, and both bands played by the bar, surrounded by an audience of revellers and dancers. Regulars at Hope Hall included Adrian Henri, Mike MacCartney, Roger McGough, Brian Patten and John Gorman. The group also made numerous appearances at another well-known Liverpool night-spot, the Mardi Gras.

The group underwent a change of personnel when Jones left to join the newly-formed Clayton Squares, and drummer Sloan also exited. They were replaced by Lewis Collins, who had previously played bass with the Eyes, and another former Quarry Bank student, Roger Bioletti on drums. The line-up was completed by a tenor and alto sax, the alto sax not lasting long, but the tenor sax, Roger Lewis, staying with them until The Georgians disbanded.

The new line-up hit the road again and, whilst still playing the odd Cavern and Hope Hall gig, tended to go for the better paying University and larger gigs.

Lewis Collins received an offer to join The Mojos, this was of course, an offer he could not refuse, The Mojos already being a big name with a recording contract. Lew was not to spend that long with The Mojos and joined LAMADA, eventually becoming Bodie in 'The Professionals', appeared in films such as 'Who Dares Wins

Instead of recruiting another bass player, Ashby changed from lead to bass and Dugdill moved from rhythm to lead. Brian "Fagsy" Farrell, the group's road manager also joined them on vocals.

Through Farrell's influence, their music moved very much towards Soul and, whilst again they continued to play odd gigs at The Cavern and Hope Hall, they played much more at The Mardi Gras, which tended to be very much 'in' to soul music. They also played University gigs, which paid better.
