ICE - late 1979

ICE was a Charlotte, North Carolina based band. Although the membership was constantly changing, two of the members were constant from the beginning. The founders, Steve Berrier and Clint Alford, both shared a feverish desire to play music. From the beginning, there was a constructive competition between the two. Although they were the founding members, decisions were always made democratically. The vote of a member that had been there only days was as valuable as the vote of anyone else.

The band started out as most did, in the drummers garage. Drummer Jim, was a member for only the first few weeks. He quickly tired of the pace desired by the others and decided to call it quits. The picture above was the only live performance that Jim participated in. After he left the band, we were not only in search of a new drummer, but also a place to rehearsh and to increase the size and variation of our songlist. Bassist Tom "Tennesee" Cooper, and myself, became very close friends. Although at that time, Tennesee did not have the years of musicianship behind him that Clint Alford and myself had, he was a true worker and never got tired of the fast paced we thrived on.

Linda Knauf, or Linda Kane as she was known, was the next edition to the band. She was an excellent vocalist, and her powerful voice was well controlled. She could wale out Janis Joplin style, and then as quickly, soften her voice for a tender balad. Bonnie Raitt, Pat Benatar, Janis Joplin and Debra Harry were favorites, but she was equally comfortable singing Steve Perry and providing backup vocals for Pink Floydd's Dirty Woman. From the first day, we knew she was there to stay, and we were glad.

Clint, Linda and myself would end up being the center around which new membership would revolve. I have provided some info on everyone who was involved with ICE, so I hope you will read about them. Playing with these people was a high point in my life, and I will never forget them. ICE continued performing as often as possible and in just about any place that would let us setup, until around 1984. At that point a theft of the bands entire sound system would prove to be more then we could handle. The band disbanded after that but up until 1990, we stayed in touch and would often get together just to jam...

I hope you enjoy this section as it is special to me. If you have a band or did and want to include some info and pictures here, then you have come to the right place, because, after all, this site is dedicated to you and me...A few of the many Unknown Musicians..
