Dave has never been known to be a technical guitar player, his lack of knowledge about rack mounted effects and other such technology astounds critics and fans a like. Dave has never been known to play one type of guitar either. He's been known to play "whatever sounds good." Dave does have a preference when it comes to most of his gear, however.
Dave's pedalboard includes two Boss DD-3 Digital Delays, CH-1 Super Chorus, DS-2 Turbo Distortion, OC-2 Octave, NS-2 Noise Suppressor, PSM-5 Power Supply and Master Switch, Dunlap CryBaby wah, Marshall channel-switching pedal and A/B box for tuning from his Boss TU-12H. His heads are Marshall JCM 900 100-watt Hi Gain Dual Reverbs, running through a double stack of 4x12 Marshall cabs.
As far as guitars go, Dave was known to play Paul Reed Smiths towards the later days of Jane's. He prefers to play Parker Flys live on acoustic-sounding pieces (Under the Bridge, My Friends, etc.) He also plays Fender Custom Shop Strats, and most often Modulus Graphite Strats.
His Modulus Strat has a black alder body, bolt-on graphite neck, Sperzel locking tuners, Bartolini booster preamp and a sing/hum/sing Duncun pickup configuration.
Dave only switched to playing Strats to play the Chili Peppers older material, but kept on playing them on the new material as well. As far as recording goes, Dave is picky when it somes time to lay down tracks. He tries to fill as many tracks as possible and then begins to delete or combine them. He usually lays down 10 tracks, 4 of which probably end up on the record. He also prefers to do all the overdubbing himself, with no one in the room with him.
Dave also has a small studio in his house. He has two ADAT's, a little drum set, and a Mackie board. He uses the studio for experimenting and smaller projects. One of these projects was the soundtrack to the independant film called Ugly Meets the People, which he and Chad Smith both colaborated on.
