Madness - The Band

The Band

(Click on the picture or name for a sample performance)

Suggs
Graham McPherson
Married
Vocals

Notes: Whilst the band were still successful Madness had a fixed T.V. appearance on a saturday night show presented by Gloria Honeyford from Pebble Mill but Suggs was unavailable as his wife was having a baby. Neil Ferris from ferret and spanner explained the situation to the shows bosses over the phone after unsuccessfully trying to get Suggs to come by limo to the studio as soon as the baby was born. Neil assured the T.V. people that he would come up with some sort of solution. Neil got a phone call from the T.V. people when he got home saying words to the affect of "The band will never work again". As the phone calls went back and forth the T.V. appearance got closer and closer until it was found out that Madness were contracted to do the appearance....and so they did the appearence but without Suggs. Instead they used a dummy for the lead vocals and it was said to be unnoticeable!

Barso'
Mike Barson
Married
Keyboard/Piano

Notes: Mike bought the band together but was the first to leave (He left in December '83 after the band had had a long string of top ten hits in the British charts and a number one with 'House of fun'. This top ten success was only broken by 'Cardiac Arrest' in 1982. After Mike left the band never saw a top ten hit) He arranged the meeting in the local school. He got Suggs to sing for them after he heard him singing on the bus. Mike is now helping Suggs with his solo album.

Woody
Daniel M Woodgate
Unknown
Drums

Notes: Woody thinks the worst thing Madness ever did was form "The Madness" after Madness had split up (for 2 years). He thinks the best thing he ever did was cut his long hair off (back to his good old 1979 hair cut). Woody was also the person in the bird suit in the "It must be love" video, or so we highly suspect.

Bedders
Mark Bedford
Married
Bass guitar

Notes: Mark's pride and joy is his daughter Alice, who is so much his pride and joy that it made it worth printing this. Unfortunately Bedders wasn't in the 1995 "Mad Dogs" tour because he's getting a bit tired of the whole Madness thing.

Chas Smash
(b)Carl Smyth
Unknown
Backing vocals and Horns plus occasional lead vocals

Notes: Chas wasn't much of a main player when it came to the band's performances, but he co-wrote many of the great Madness songs including "Our House" "Tomorrows(Just another day)" "Cardiac arrest" and "In the city". He also sang amongst others "One step beyond", but took position of backing singer and horn player in all the other Madness songs. Chas also Co-Wrote a song called "Green Eyes" on Suggs' album. Carl Smyth started out in 1979 and ended up Chas Smash in 1986. It's not known to us why Chas or Carl changed his named but personally I like the name Chas.

Chrissy Boy
Chris Foreman
Unknown
Rhythm-lead guitar

Notes: For the video of "Shut up" Chris wanted to rent a guitar, that looked like a ray gun, that he had seen in a music shop. the song "Shut up" is supposed to be a Slade style number, so Chris wanted something special. However, the ray gun shaped guitar was unavailable so he ended up with a guitar called the Superyob, its previous owner being Dave Hill of Slade.

Thommo
Lee Thompson
Married
Saxophone

Notes: Amongst Lee's favourite bands are Supergrass, for their debut album, and Pulp for their persistence in 15 years. Lee's love for music really started when, at 19 years old, he bunked through the toilet window of the Tally Ho! opposite the Forum in Kentish Town. he climbed through the window to see a live band (as opposed to a dead band seeing as their not much cop). Lee landed himself in a cubicle toilet with Ian Dury who greeted Lee with the friendly line "What's you F*cking game then?", to which Lee replied, "I'm trying to get in to see the band". Ian looked Lee in the face and said "Well, their not in this cubicle". This was the first of many jammy sneak-ins for Lee which made him what he is today. Lee performed a Sax piece on Suggs' new album (That might as well of just called it a Madness album!) but the performance was erased: as Lee said "It wasn't a very good preformance.
