My MIDI tunes were composed on my Yamaha XG. This supports General Midi, but has its own extended set of instruments, many of which I've used. The extra instruments are accessed via Midi Bank Select. General Midi instruments are all in bank zero on the XG.

Where I have used instruments which are not General Midi you may find that your non-XG sound card chooses an instrument that sounds wrong. If you can edit MIDI files, choose bank zero for all tracks.

For best results, ensure that your sound card (XG or not) is reset before playing the file. I'd include the reset signal in the files, except I don't know how! (help appreciated)
