Missy Elliott

Missy

"I'd stand on the side of the road when I was just a little girl singing on those [trash] cans. People would roll down their windows and laugh, saying 'isn't she cute.' I had a vivid imagination. I always pretended it was some big stage. At family picnics they'd put me on the table and I'd just start singing."

Missy came on the scene back in '97 when she dropped her debut album Supa Dupa Fly. But she wasn't exactly a new jack to the music industry because she used to be in an R&B group called Sister, and had also done some guest appearances as well as some producing and arranging for other well known singers.

Supa Dupa Fly came in at the top of the charts and made Missy a household name. The cd featured several artists like Busta Rhymes, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and Da Brat, and of course Timbaland & Magoo. The video for The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) got much airplay on MTV and BET and broke out of that "everything sounds the same" mode. Missy had a unique sound of her own what won her several awards including Billboard Video Music Award for Best Clip for "Sock It 2 Me, a European Music Award for Best Rap Video, and a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video for "Not Tonight" (with Lil' Kim, Da Brat, Left Eye, and Angie Martinez).

In 1999 Missy followed up with her sophomore cd Da Real World. The first single "She's A Bitch" sent the album to the top of the music charts for weeks and was nominated for a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Rap Artist and also got a Brit Award for Best British Video ("I Want You Back" with Mel B). her single "Hot Boys" featuring Q-Tip & Eve went certified gold and topped the Billboard Rap Singles chart for a record-breaking 18 weeks. Missy was doing it again. That same year, Missy released a line of lipstick called "Misdemeanor Lipstick" and the proceeds went to a domestic violence prevention organization.

She rode her success all the way with her 2001 release of Miss E... So Addictive" and was still pumping out the hits with songs like "Get Ur Freak On," "One Minute Man" and "4 My People" (Pts. 1 & 2). The awards were still piling up as she won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance and was nominated for Best R&B Song and Best Music Video, Short Form. Missy then hit the top 40 with "Take Away" featuring Ginuwine and Tweet.

This year (2002), after winning the Lady Of Soul Award Winner for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video, Missy is still keeping busy as she is in the studio getting ready to drop yet another cd. So far the cd is still untitled but will be released on November 19th.
