Born in Washington, D.C., Elgin Lumpkin (a.k.a. Ginuwine) grew up listening to a variety of music including R&B, hip-hop, jazz and gospel. By the age of 12 he was already serious about his singing and he wanted to be a performer when he saw Michael Jackson perform on the Motown 25 T.V. special.

He was a part of an amateur hip-hop group called Finesse Five and they performed at local parties and at bars (illegally). He did his bid with another local band called Physical Wonder, and then was discovered by a member of Jodeci in 1996.

He finally he progressed into a solo act as "Ginuwine", a name chosen because he considers himself down-to-earth, and his act was initially built around impersonations of his childhood idol Michael Jackson.

Ginuwine’s debut album proved that he was “The Bachelor” who was most sought after, and on his second album he revealed that he was “100%” on top of his game. Both albums went double platinum and fans gladly welcomed Ginuwine back with open arms on his third album, “The Life.” “The Life” was the album to date that showed us who Ginuwine really is. The singer was under a lot of pressure when recording that album and when he found himself at the mercy of life's struggles, Ginuwine decided to devote all of himself to this album. Within a year of each other, Ginuwine lost both of his parents. He dug deep within himself to find his most personal feelings and share them in his music.

Ginuwine

"This album enabled me to say things that most artists wouldn't say or let anyone know. I wanted to be truthful and say what I really felt. I'm glad that I'm able to share these personal feelings with my supporters. It makes me feel that they really know me."

Ginuwine dedicates the song "2 Reasons I Cry," to his parents.

But don’t think that “The Life” is all about revelations and depression, oh no… because Ginuwine is still the same ole G he’s always been. The album's first single, "There It Is," is done with full-fledged Ginuwine flare.

On this album Ginuwine reunites with friend and producer Timbaland for a number of the album's tracks, also featured on the production side of the album is Raphael Saadiq, who produced "2 Way," a song devoted strictly to the 2way pager way of life.

Ginuwine

In addition to singing, Ginuwine is on the verge of testing the waters at acting. He has starred in the broadway hit “The Wiz” and he also was featured in the movie “Juwanna Man” with Vivica Fox and Miguel Nunez. Ginuwine also had an occasional occurring role in the TV sitcom Moesha before it was canceled.

Ginuwine is currently featured on the soundtrack for the movie “Barbershop”. His latest single is called "Stingy." The movie will feature Ice Cube, Anthony Anderson, Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve and Troy Garity. It's a comedy about a the goings-on in a local neighborhood barbershop on the south side of Chicago. The soundtrack also features music by Fabolous featuring P. Diddy & Jagged Edge, Ghostface Killah featuring Ruff Endz, Jhene with cousin Lil' Fizz of B2K, Glenn Lewis featuring Amel Larrieux & more. “Barbershop” hits the movie theaters on September 13th so keep your eyes open!
