Cress Williams

Cress Williams

Cress was born in Heidelberg, Germany, but has been in L.A. in Southern California since he was about three years old.

As a kid, Cress says he watched a lot of television while growing up. He was a fan of a lot of old shows - The Brady Bunch, the Little Rascals, Abbott and Costello, the old Jerry Lewis.

All that television watching gave cress the urge to become an actor himself. Cress says he knew really early on, that he wanted to perform. At first he pushed it aside, thinking it was just a phase, and something that every kid wanted to do. But by the time he was in junior high school, he knew he just had to try his hand at acting.

Cress says his mother was more supportive of his decision to pursue and acting career than his father.

"My father wanted me to wait and see so I'd have something to fall back on. My mother was always in my corner, cheering me on. She had the advantage of seeing me perform, and see me grow. She wanted to see me happy." He did some training in a little Junior College, called Fullerton. He finished his training I finished at UCLA. Cress believes that the tools that an actor truly needs can only be found in the theatre. And although he was anxious to go out and get hands-on experience in the theatres, Cress finished school though, because he wanted to have a degree in his hands.

Once Cress's career launched, he was soon fully emerged in the hectic life of a successful actor.

Cress Williams

"I was living like a vampire. Your social life is sort of taken away, because nobody lives those hours! I missed sports, just general events and knowing what's going on.. spending time with my friends."

But even though he couldn't see his friends & family as often as he would have liked, he says he had a good support group.

"Almost all of my friends are actors of some kind, and so they're very supportive. Most of them aren't surprised; they've always told me this was going to happen. But it also gives them hope, because it's a tough business." When Cress isn't doing a project, he just likes to go home, and unwind by taking care of his animals (two cats and a dog), and cuddle up with his girlfriend (whenever he has one!)

He also likes to relax by listening to music. Cress learned to play the guitar when he was in college.

"My taste in music is extremely eclectic. It ranges from hip-hop to alternative, and I'm a big jazz fan. My favorite these days is a mixture of folk, spiritual, blues, all mixed into one."

Cress is also a sports fan. When he has the time, he likes to basketball to keep in shape. He also follows professional basketball and football on TV. Cress says he has a lot of equipment in his garage and tries to work out when he has time.

"A lot of it is eating right. I'm not vegetarian exactly, but I've cut down on meat, and eat healthier things.

Besides being an accomplished actor, Cress is a contributor to many charities. He says celebrities have so much power, and he feels that it's only good sense (politically) to give to charities, because that area is just one way of getting people out to vote, and getting their voices to be heard.

You may remember him as the tall, dark and handsome 'Terence Williams' on the (now cancelled) hit sitcom "Living Single". His nickname was 'Scooter', the long-time school friend of Khadijah (Queen Latifah's).

Cress says after doing television roles, he got recognized a lot more because people would see him weekly as opposed to the long breaks between movies.

"It actually surprises me when I get recognized. It was a little strange getting used to it at first, but generally I like it; it's a big esteem booster. I've come to realize it just doesn't work to be in disguise. Some people can hide, and some just can't."

Cress can hardly hide from his fans considering he stands 6'5" tall!

The future looks bright for Cress Williams, and he says in the near future he would like to run a theatre company of his own in L.A.

"Possibly do some producing and directing… but not for film quite yet; possibly for my theatre company."

He also says he'd like to have a family soon. And for the up and coming artists, Cress says the first thing you should do is train.

"Go and study your craft! Most important thing is not to put a time limit on achieving success. If you put the focus on the craft, wanting to understand: that and understand yourself, you will succeed."

Acting Credits:

Cress was very fortunate when it came to getting roles. On his first time out auditioning, he landed a role on "Beverly Hills, 90210." He was a natural to play D'Shawn Hardell, the troubled high school basketball player who was tutored by Brandon.

"They let me know I was very lucky for that to be my first show," said Williams.

On his second audition, he landed the role of 'Scooter', Khadijah's (Queen Latifah's) music mogul boyfriend, on "Living Single."

"I was hitting two for two right out of the box!."

In Films, Cress Williams has appeared in "Rebound", "The Doom Generation", "3 Eays in The Valley", "Never Been Kissed", "Underworld." He is currently filming the romantic comedy called "Masquerade" for BET's new Arabesque line, movies by and for African Americans.

On television, he has appeared in "90210", "Living Single", "NYPB Blue", "Lois & Clark", "Jag", and "Star Trek-Deep Space Nine".

Cress also did a stint on the television drama ER

"I was ecstatic," said Cress. "It was a show I watched for years. I had a big crush on Gloria Reuben. It was a little intimidating, but it's a very cool set."

Williams has also appeared on stage in "A Mid-Summer's Night Dream", "Extremities", "A Beat to Live BY", "T-Bone-n-Weasle", and "Wedding Band", directed by Debbie Allen.
