Oi! American Oi! : The Service

The Service : Brew City Oi!

What can be said about a band that hails from Milwaukee, WI, the "Brew City" of the United States of America? The Service play some great Oi! music reminiscent of UK hardcore/Oi! bands such as The Blitz and Abrasive Wheels. The Service formed out of the ashes of The Statics (whose singer joined the USMC). Currently the band's lineup consists of Spanky on vocals, Thomas J. on guitar, Donny "Knuckles" on bass, and Big John on drums. They've been together for almost four years now, forming sometime in 1993.

As mentioned above, the band's sound is pretty heavy. They're influenced more by British Oi! and punk than anything else. A listen to their track on Backstreets of American Oi! entitled "American Grafitti" will show that. Their songs cover topics such as so-called poor beggars coming from wealthy backgrounds ("Don't Feed the Animals"), youth and pride, and plain skinhead life the way they see it.

They have material out on Sta-Press Records (Backstreets... and a 7" called American Grafitti which is out on United Pressing; very impressive stuff. They opened for Rancid and the Offspring way back in '94 when that tour went through Milwaukee and they were well received by the crowd, presumably full of trendy MTV-ites out to see the flavor of the week. If the Service went over well with such a crowd, they should be welcomed more-so by those that love American Oi! music. So check out the Service if you get the opportunity, especially live...and help put Brew City Oi! on the map!
