After a long period of dormancy it finally seems
like the music life in Bulgaria is back on feet and ready to kick
ass. The most serious reason to say this is true is the debut album
of one very talented, practiced and clever band - SOLARIS. They basically
know everything about music since they are in existence for some ten years
now. The band started back in 1987 and not quite long after that they switched
their bassplayer with a new one and in the fall of that same year managed
to acquire a firm line-up, which has been kept until present days. In 1988
SOLARIS are one of the biggest names in the new wave of Bulgarian
music, along with Ahat, Era, Concurent and it looks like this place fits
the band perfectly - it is the time of intense gigging and playing. Those
prosperous times were severely broken by the sharp and quick freeze in
music life - there were still no clubs open, no concerts, no shows,
and in the several cases of such happenings the bad sound ruined every
effort laid. SOLARIS gave up live playing and started their patient walk
alongside all studios in Sofia where they experimented with their own funding
and on their own backs. Life eventually sent them off into different professions
and so the music became a natural hobby. Nevertheless, for a short period
of time, Peter Slavov (form the very popular band FSB) took the burden
of being their impresario and SOLARIS managed to record two tracks in the
National TV studio and the one of those luckily got included in a compilation
LP. Still that could not be a serious achievement. SOLARIS patiently waited
for their time and in 1995 they finally entered Graffitti studio and record
for their own satisfaction their first album. The work is hard and of genuine
perfection.
It is two after that - in 1997 when the production
is remastered by Rumen Boiadjiev and today finally moves the Bulgarian
market as it is surely something that has but never so far been heard of
around these lands.
“The album should be perceived as a document of
a long period of time of our life together as a band and as people”
- says leader Daniel Radev. In the music of SOLARIS one can feel the pleasant
influence of DEEP PURPLE, QUENNSRYCHE, DREAM THEATER, but something very
personal as well. The lyrics are in Bulgarian, so you (all the Bulgarians
out there) will easily get to the point and see their depth. “It’s important
for the people to know that the cuts are 100% composed in 1987” - gets on
Daniel Radev, yet the album sounds quite up-to-date. The plans of SOLARIS
go on to their future work and follow-ups of this album. While we sit in
wait for future victories of these virtuous musicians, the debut album
“Oligotime”, produced by the band themselves and published by music company
WIZARD is turning into the Bulgarian progressive album of
the year!
