Richard Sudlow
Richard Sudlow, born on the Sudlow estate near London in 1748, came to America at 18 years of age as a surveyor for a Major Skene in Skenesboro, NY, now called Whitehall, NY. (You can still see at least one of his maps in the Skenesboro Museum there.) Richard was a man strong in stature, standing above six feet in height.? Being British, he was taken prisoner and held in Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Connecticut soon afterward and built a gristmill on the Housatonic River, near New Milford, CT.

Richard and his wife, Abigail, had nine children, four of whom died in infancy. The oldest daughter was Elizabeth, who eventually married John Haviland. Their next son, Joseph, born in 1787, worked with his father in the gristmill and eventually purchased it from Richard in 1812. Richard died two years later, on May 1, 1814, at the age of 66."
