Spider-Man Information and HistoryFirst introduced in August 1962, Spider-Man appeared in the comic Amazing Fantasy #15. Although this story (written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Steve Ditko) was only eleven pages long, it peaked enough interest to warrant a separate comic series dedicated solely to Spider-Man's adventures. Thus, in 1963, The Amazing Spider-Man series was born--it expanded on the character of Peter Parker, and, in 1966 raised the Green Goblin from a minor villain to the level of Spidey's #1 nemesis when the bad guy discovers Spider-Man's secret identity. In 1977, a made-for-TV Spider-Man movie was released and a television series followed it. About 40 years after his creation, Spider-Man is doing better than ever before with the release of the new movie, the 6th animated series dedicated to Spidey, and the usual 6 monthly comic books. It looks like Spider-Man will be a symbol of American pop culture for quite a while, judging by the overwhelming success of the movie. |

Spider-Man Movie: Plot OutlineThis outline will be kept brief to avoid spoiling the movie for those who haven't yet seen it. Okay, basically, Spider-Man tells the tale of a nerdy high school student named Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), who pines after the beautiful Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), the movie's leading lady. On a school trip, Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider--the bite produces some strange reactions and gives him superhuman powers. Peter eventually takes on the role of Spider-Man after a burglar--whom he failed to stop earlier--kills his beloved Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson). Spider-Man catches the burglar and is plagued with guilt for not stopping him the first time and is reminded of his Uncle Ben's words, "With great power, comes great responsibility." With this in mind, Peter chooses to use his powers to fight crime, a decision which eventually pits him against his arch-enemy, the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). |
