It's Erev Rosh Hashanah, and services are about to begin.  The synagogue is packed.  As the congregants are milling around, shmoozing before services, everyone seems to be distracted by a man who has brought with him a rather large dog.  "What chutzpah!" an elderly woman whispers aloud.

Services begin, and everyone is fascinated by how well the dog behaves.   The next morning, the man and his dog arrive early and promptly begin dovening.  This time, the dog is wearing its own little tallis and yarmulke, and even appears, upon closer inspection, to be shuckling back and forth as the hazzan intones the prayers.  The congregation is amazed.

The week goes by and Kol Nidre arrives.  The solemn worship service begins.  The man and his dog are back, and this time, just as the hazzan is about to begin the prayers, the dog stands up on its hind legs and howls "Ba-ROOOOOOOCH....!" more melodically than the best hazzan.

After the service, everyone is clamoring to meet this man and his remarkable dog.  Finally the rabbi comes up to him and says, "That's one talented pooch you have there.  You know, you should really consider sending your dog to a yeshiva!"

The man looks down, shakes his head, and says, "I know, I know . . . And all he talks about is med school!"

Ira comes home from his visit to the doctor very flustered; he calls to his wife, Esther:
"Esther, I have terrible news."
"What is it Ira?"
"The doctor says I have HERPES!"
"Herpes! Oy that's terrible! Hey Ira, by the vay, what is herpes?"
"You know, Esther, I'm not sure myself, I'm going to look it up."
After panickedly looking in a book, Ira says: "Oh, thank G-d Esther, the doctor made a mistake."
"But Ira, how can you be so sure?"
"Because it says right here: 'Herpes: a disease of the GENTILES!'

For all of you who don't know, Rosh Hashana is the Jewish New Year. It begins this year at sundown on October 1.  Traditionally, on the first day of Rosh Hashana you throw bread crumbs away to represent throwing away your sins of the past year and starting fresh.

SUGGESTIONS FOR TASHLICH

Taking a few crumbs to Tashlich from whatever old bread is in the house lacks subtlety, nuance and religious sensitivity.  Instead, this coming Rosh Hashana consider these options:

For ordinary sins, use White Bread
For exotic sins, French Bread
For particularly dark sins, Pumpernickel
For complex sins, Multi-grain
For twisted sins, Pretzels
For tasteless sins, Rice Cakes
For sins of indecision, Waffles
For sins committed in haste, Matzah
For sins committed in less than eighteen minutes, Shmurah Matzah
For sins of chutzpah, Fresh Bread
For substance abuse, Poppy Seed
For committing arson, Toast
For committing auto theft, Caraway
For being ill tempered, Sourdough
For silliness, Nut Bread
For not giving full value, Shortbread
For jingoism, Yankee Doodles
For excessive use of irony, Rye Bread
For telling bad jokes, Corn Bread
For hardening our hearts, Jelly doughnuts
For being money hungry, Enriched Bread or Raw Dough
For war-mongering, Kaiser Rolls
For immodest dressing, Tarts
For causing injury or damage to others, Tortes
For promiscuity, Hot Buns
For racism, Crackers
For sophisticated racism, Ritz Crackers
For davvening off tune, Flat Bread
For being holier than thou, Bagels
For unfairly upbraiding another, Challah
For indecent photography, Cheese Cake
For trashing the environment, Dumplings
For sins of laziness, Any Very Long Loaf
For sins of pride, Puff Pastry
For lying, Baked Goods with Nutrasweet and Olestra
For wearing tasteless hats, Tam Tams
For the sins of the righteous, Angel Food Cake
For selling your soul, Devils Food Cake
For lust in your heart, Wonder Bread
For inhaling, Stoned Wheat

Remember, you don't have to show your crumbs to anyone.

The Suit

Yossel goes to a tailor to try on a new custom-made suit.  The first thing he notices is that the arms are too long.
"No problem," says the tailor.  "Just bend them at the elbow and hold them out in front of you.  See, now it's fine."
"But the collar is up around my ears!"
"It's nothing.  Just hunch your back up a little . . . no, a little more.   . . . that's it."
"But I'm stepping on my cuffs!"  Yossel cries in desperation.
"Nu, bend you knees a little to take up the slack.  There you go.  Look in the mirror -- the suit fits perfectly."  So, twisted like a pretzel, Yossel lurches out onto the street.  Reba and Florence see him go by.
"Oh, look," says Reba, "that poor man!"
"Yes," says Florence, "but what a beautiful suit!"

The Rabbis

Overheard at a Conference of Reform Rabbis:
Q:   How many Orthodox Rabbis does it take to change a light bulb?
A:   What?!?  Change?

The Maps

Friddel was cleaning her attic and found a beautiful old lamp.  As she rubbed off the dust, a genie popped out.
"Thank you for releasing me from this prison," the genie said.  "To show my gratitude, I will grant you one wish."
"Wonderful!"  Friddel said in surprise.  She reached for her atlas and pointed to maps of the Middle East.  "The people here have been fighting for as long as I can remember.  My one wish is to bring peace to this land."
"Umm, that's a little too..." the genie stammered as he looked at the maps.  "These people...they've been...it goes way back...I'm afraid you're just going to have to make another wish."
"Too bad," the woman said sadly.  "Could you at least help the Orioles win the pennant this year?"
The genie thought a moment, then opened his hand. "Hmmmm, let me see those maps again..."

A blind man and his dog attend a local shul (synagogue.) About half way through the service, the dog begins to chant along with the cantor. People are in tears by the beautiful harmonious tones of this incredible dog.

At the end of the service, many people come over to the blind man, and congratulate him on such a wonderful dog.

"Has he ever thought of becoming a cantor," asked one of the rabbis?

"Oh, yes," said the blind man, "I've mentioned that to him several times, but he's already made up his mind, he wants to be a doctor!"

A Last Wish

Three hunters are out on a safari . . . an American, a Brit and an Israeli.  They are captured by cannibals who start getting the cooking pots ready.  The cannibal chief tells the hunters they can have one last wish.

"What's your last request?" he asks the American.

"I'd like a steak," he replies.  So the cannibals kill a zebra and serve the American his steak.

"What do you want?" the cannibal chief asks the Brit.

"I'd like to have a smoke on my pipe," which they let him do.

Then the chief asks the Israeli, "What's your last wish?"

"I want you to kick my rear end."

"Be serious," says the top cannibal.

"C'mon, you promised," says the Israeli.

"Oh, all right," says the chief, who delivers the requested kick.  Whereupon, the Israeli pulls out a gun, shoots the chief and a few other cannibals while the rest run away.  The American and Brit are furious.

"Why didn't you do that in the first place, so we wouldn't have had to go through all this?" they demand.

Replies the Israeli, "What? Are you mad? The UN would have condemned me as the aggressor."

Toilet Paper

A husband, tired of his wife asking him how she looks, buys her a full length mirror.  This does little to help, as now she just stands in front of the mirror, looking at herself, asking him how she looks.  One day, fresh out of the shower, she is yet again in front of the mirror, now complaining that her breasts are too small.

Uncharacteristically, the husband comes up with a suggestion.  "If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper and rub it between your breasts for a few seconds."

Willing to try anything, the wife fetches a piece of toilet paper, and stands in front of the mirror, rubbing it between her breasts.   "How long will this take?" she asks.

"They'll grow larger over a period of years," he replies.

The wife stops.  "Why do you think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my breasts everyday will make my breasts grow over the years?" she asks.

The husband shrugs. "It worked for your tush, didn't it?"

With a wife like that . . .

The man says, "What's the problem officer?"
Officer: You were going at least 75 in a 55 zone.
Man: No sir, I was going 65.
Wife: Oh Harry, You were going 80.
Man gives his wife a dirty look.
Officer: I will also give you a ticket for your broken tail light.
Man: Broken tail light? I didn't know about a broken tail light!
Wife: Oh Harry, you've known about that tail light for months.
Man gives his wife a dirty look.
Officer: I will also give you a citation for not wearing your seat belt.
Man: Oh, I just took it off when you were walking up to the car.
Wife: Oh Harry, you never wear your seat belt.
Man turns to his wife and yells, " Shut your damn mouth!"
Officer turns to the woman and says, "Ma'm, does your husband talk to you this way all the time?"
Wife says," No, only when he's drunk."

In the Beginning . . .

God Created heaven and the earth.  Quickly He was faced with a class action suit for failure to file an environmental impact statement.  He was granted a temporary permit for the project, but was stymied with the cease and desist order for the earthly part. Appearing at the hearing, God was asked why He began His earthly project in the first place.  He replied that He just liked to be creative.

Then God said, "Let there be light," and immediately the officials demanded to know how the light would be made.  Would there be strip mining?   What about thermal pollution?  God explained that the light would come from a huge ball of fire.  God was granted provisional permission to make light, assuming that no smoke would result from the ball of fire; that He would obtain a building permit; and to conserve energy, would have the light out half the time.  God agreed and said He would call the light "Day" and the darkness "Night."  Officials replied that they were not interested in semantics.

God said, "Let the earth bring forth green herb and such as many seed."

The EPA agreed so long as native seed was used.

Then God said, "Let waters bring forth creeping creatures having life; and the fowl that may fly over the earth."  Officials pointed out this would require approval from the Department of Game coordinated with the Heavenly Wildlife Federation and the Audubongelic Society.

Everything was O.K. until God said He wanted to complete the project in Six days.  Officials said it would take at least 200 days to review the application and impact statement.  After that there would be a public hearing.  Then there would be 10-12 months before...

At this point God created Hell.

Barbwire and Coolhand

This woman is visiting in Israel and notices that her little travel alarm needs a battery.   She looks for a watch repair shop and while she doesn't read Hebrew she finally sees a shop with clocks and watches in the window. She goes in and hands the man her clock.
The man says, "Madam, I don't repair clocks. I am a Rabbi. I do circumcisions."
She says, "Why all the clocks in the window?"
And he says, "And what should I have in my window?"

An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates.   An angel checks his dossier and says, "Ah, you're an engineer . . . you're in the wrong place." So the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in.

Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements.  After a while, they've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is a pretty popular guy.

One day God calls Satan up on the telephone and says off-handedly, "So, how's it going down there in Hell?"

Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great.   We've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next."

God replies, "What???   You've got an engineer?   That's a mistake-he should never have gotten down there; send him up here."

Satan says, "No way. I like having an engineer on the staff, and I'm keeping him."

God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue."

Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah, right. And, just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

Some folks think too much . . .

The Seven Deadly Sins of Gilligan's Island theory is quite simple. Each of the seven characters on the island represents each of the seven deadly sins. Now, this theory seems to fit upon initial inspection, there are technical difficulties when you get down to THE MAN himself, Gilligan.

Run with me on this one...

Most obvious is the Professor, who fits PRIDE to a T.   Any man who can make a ham radio out of some wire and two coconuts has to be pretty cocky.  (His character was later revised and given a series of his own, called MacGyver".)

For the sin of ENVY we need look no further than Maryann, who may have worn those skimpy little tops, but could never achieve Ginger's glamour.  (As an interesting and completely irrelevant side note, a nationwide survey of college students a few years ago revealed that the professor and Maryann were voted the most likely couple to have 'done it' on the island.)

And who could doubt for a moment that Ginger is LUST incarnate?  Sure, the kids were supposed to think she was ACTING, but we all know what being deprived episode after episode was doing to her.  You know and I know that glazed look wasn't boredom, my friends.

What kind of person takes a trunk full of money on a three-hour cruise?   Mr. Howell gets my vote for GREED.

We are now left with three characters and three Deadly Sins.   We have Gilligan, the Skipper and Mrs. Howell to whom we must match GLUTTONY, SLOTH and ANGER.  As you can see, there is a Gilligan problem here.

Certainly we can further eliminate Mrs. Howell from this equation by connecting her with SLOTH.   She did jack shit during her many years on the island and everybody knows it.

This leaves ANGER and GLUTTONY, either of which the Skipper had no shortage.   He was, after all, a big guy with the tendency to hit Gilligan with his hat at least once an episode.  After much consideration, I have decided that he can easily do double-duty, covering the two remaining Deadly Sins.

So here we have the Seven Deadly Sins trapped in an endlessly recurring Hell of hope followed by denial and despair, forced to live with each other in our TVs until the last re-run ends.  And who is their captor?  What keeps them trapped there?

Gilligan.

Gilligan is SATAN. Think about it.

Birth of a J.A.P.

This "Birth of a JAP" is better done in person , but I'll try.

You ask . . ."So, you want to see my impression of the birth of a JAP ?"

I don't know if this will translate to the internet well, but it is a guaranteed laugh getter.  (Okay, so there are no guarantees.)
