Barnard Elementary School, built in 1909, just two years after the Statehood of Oklahoma. The school was named for Kate Barnard, the first teacher in town. Originally, the structure held two very large, round, metal fire escapes, resembling slides, on either side of the building, from a 3rd story window to the ground. Though parts of the building are still in use by the school, the fire escapes were removed several years ago and the 3rd floor is completely closed. Three newer structures house most of the children, with a brand new addition being built this summer. (1999) Barnard was once the school house for Kindergarten through 6th grade -- it now holds only 1st and 2nd grades.

The sign over the entrance is the only thing remaining to tell what this building once was. This structure, like so many others on East Main, are now used as pawn shops and second-hand stores, residing under the title of "Antiques".

"Memories, they can't be bought, and
They can't be won at the carnivals for free ~
It took me years, to get those souviners,
And I don't know how they slipped away from me..."
