Prayer and Virtue Cards

A Raising Spiritual Children Project

These cards are a fun way for your child to learn memorization skills. They can be used at spiritual gatherings like Feast or everyday at bedtime. Make a few at a time and create a collection which can be passed along from child to child. (Thanks to Diana Metreaud for this idea.)

*SUPPLIES: Black markers, large index cards, typing paper, construction paper, scissors, glue, photos or images cut from magazines or greeting cards, clear contact paper, selections of prayers, sacred text and/or virtues and descriptions from "The Virtues Guide" or other publication. (The "Virtues Guide" has a new website.)

*Select a few prayers, virtues and selections of sacred text. You can type the selections out, making sure the text stays within about 4" so that it will fit nicely on the index cards, or you can copy them directly onto the card after the image has been glued down. If you type your selections, trim around each one with scissors before glueing them down.

*For each text selection or virtue, choose a corresponding photo or image to decorate the card. You can cut these from magazines, draw them yourself, or have your child decorate each card. If the image is small you may wish to glue a piece of colored construction paper down on the index card first, for visual interest, before glueing down the image itself. Glue the typed selection in pace and let dry.

*To make the cards long lasting, laminate them or cover the front and back of the card with clear contact paper.

*Prayers for Children I have put together a page of selected text and prayers for children for you to use with this project and others.
