What is IRC?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Thousands
of people use it, and its a good source for information on just about anything.
There are several different enities EFNet, Dalnet and Undernet and many
more.
What's in a name? EFNet, Undernet (Excerpt
from The Internet Complete Reference 2nd Edition by Harley Hahn)
"The history of IRC is filled
with agreements, disagreements, alliances, break-ups
and intrigue (sort of like Lord of the Rings
on speed). In 1990 the people who programed and
administered the various IRC servers had fundamental
disagreements over how to expand the network. One group wanted to use a
central IRC server named eris.berkeley.edu to which all the IRC
servers in the U.S. would connect. They also proposed similar central servers
for Europe and other parts of the world. A second group of people wanted
to use a non-centralized "backbone" of servers.
The differences proved
to be irreconcilable and the server eris.berkeley.edu was banished
from the network. (In IRC terms, the server was "q-lined; the "q" stands
for "quarantine".) The people who were pushing for the centralized system
rallied behind eris.berkeley.edu and formed their own smaller network
named A-net (Anarchy network). Other servers were moved
to A-net, effectively splitting the global IRC
network into two parts.
Within a short time,
the remainder of the original network came to be known as the "Eris-Free
Network" or EFNet. Thus, the name EFNet actually means "the network that
is free from the eris.berkeley.edu server".
In the next few years,
the EFNet expanded rapidly while the A-net died. Today, there are many
IRC networks, but EFNet is still the largest. The next largest is Undernet,
developed as an alternate network. The neme Undernet was originally chosen
to refer to an "underworld net", hidden from the main IRC network.
Ironically, Undernet
is considered to be a consevative, well-managed network compared to today's
EFNet, which still retains some of the anarchy of early IRC."
