Moving in at GeoCities

After you've acquired an "address" in a "Neighborhood" at GeoCities you need to begin "moving in." When you joined at GeoCities, an "index.html" page for your address was built using the information you entered in your User Profile. That information is what visitors to your web address will see when they visit.

Within a "reasonable" period of time, usually two (2) weeks, you are expected to begin to make some changes to the "basic information" on the "index.html" page. (Note: If you fail to make some changes within that period of time you will receive messages from GeoCities stating that you must Move In or your web address will be "deleted.") The changes are what constitutes "moving in."

If you're unfamiliar with "HTML and webpage building," you might want to visit the "Webpage Building Information" page.

The actual steps consist of going to the Yahoo!GeoCities Home Page, clicking on the button labelled "Sign In" and you will will be taken to a new page where you fill in your Member Name and Password and click OK. You should then be returned to the first page where you scroll down and click "File Manager." If not, an "alert" will appear telling you there is an error and will ask you if you wish to try again. Click OK and then make sure that you entered your information correctly, and that there are NO CAPITAL letters.

You will notice one file in your directory--it's filename is "index.html." This is the file that you will be working on. If you click View to the right of the filename you can see what is on it. Among other things, it will say that you "have not moved in yet." This was put here when you signed up. It's to let everyone know who goes to visit your home page that you have joined and that you will soon be starting to develop you pages.

IMPORTANT! Though you will be changing what's on your "index.html" page, do not "Rename" it! The name "index.html" is the agreed upon name for the "first" or "opening" page. Your other pages can be named almost anything, but browsers only know which one to open first if it is named "index.html". Click the little checkbox next to "index.html." This is how you select it, and tell the File Manager that this is the file you want to work on.

Now it's time to choose your Editor. If you are new to HTML, select the "Basic HTML Editor" from the pull-down menu. Note: The "EZ Editor" is also good for those new to HTML, but it is more difficult to use and should be tried after you are more familiar. The "Advanced Editor" is for those who are familiar with HTML coding. Now click the Edit button. The BASIC and EZEditors descriptions are available by clicking the button to the right of the drop-down editor selection window.

After you've selected an Editor (Advanced is recommended) you can scroll down to the box labelled "Body Text" , you will see the "not moved in yet" message. You can select and delete that message, and then put one in of your own. Then scroll down and click the button labelled "Preview." This shows you how your page looks at the top, and under the "[-------- Page Ends Here --------]" line, is the "Basic HTML Editor"--ready for more changes. You can continue by adding links and background color. Make sure that you click "Save" or "Save and Continue Editing" every time you make a change that you like.
