My Light Set Up

I was reasonably successful with this light setup. It consisted of a 270W SuperAgro bulb from HydroFarm and 6 shoplights with 40W fluorescent bulbs.

I went nuts and bought a HydroFarm light cart. I had the SuperAgro bulb up top, and 2 shoplights with 4 fluorescents on the level below. With the intense light of the 270W bulb I was able to flower some minicatts, John DiBiase and Ascda Princess Mikasa 'Sapphire'

As my collection grew I copied the Hydrofarm cart with some scrap plywood I had around the house, and put 4 more shoplight fixtures on it with fluorescent bulbs. The plants on the top level got 'overflow' light from the Superagro bulb, and I was able to bloom Oncidiums there.

On the lower levels, which were lighted solely by fluorescents, I grew Paphs and Phals. The only trouble was that the Phal spikes would get tangled in the shoplight fixtures and I'd have to gently guide them free, which resulted in warped spike formation.

All this was done in a spare bedroom in my house. Finally, the carting of water to the plants, the expense of changing out bulbs, finding that the manufacturer's estimate of bulb life was a joke and the burnout of ballasts in the shoplights got to me. My success rate at reflowering my plants wasn't what my friend's was. And reading about other's collections on the OLD etc made me realize my conditions just weren't optimal. I decided it was time to build a greenhouse.
