My Pinning

Points of Interest About Myself

I joined the Killeen Volunteer Fire Departmet, Killeen, Texas, in 1974 as a Firefighter and the Assistant Chalpain. In 1976 I became an EMT (Central Texas Colege, Killeen, Texas), then in 1980 a Paramedic (Temple Jr. College, Temple, Tx.) all while I was a Volunteer Firefighter for the Killeen Volunteer Fire Department. In 1978 I was Volunteer Firefighter of the year. I was also the Volunteer Firefighter CPR Instructor, and I helped with the instruction of the Paid Department also. I left the department in 1984.

In 1976 I went to work for Darnall Army Hospital on Ft. Hood, Texas (later it changed to Darnall Army Community Hospital) as a civilian EMT. I was one of the first five civilians to go to work there as EMT's. The other four were: George Rivera, Ronald Murphy, Jean Healy & Ranzel Meeks. As we expanded I upgraded myself to a Paramedic in 1980, as did the other four. Darnall was a centeralized Trauma Center, as is Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. I was Senior Paramedic on my shift which was 11pm - 7am, when most action took place. The DACH-EMS Patch displayed above was designed by myself and was approved by supervision, and they were ordered for us to wear.
While working at Darnall, George Rivera & myself, gave & instructed Doctors & Nurses the ACLS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, practical test refresher.
We used the body of Annie, took her head off and replaced it with an intrubation head, plus we placed an IV Arm by the torso & an EKG Testing machine was also use. It would display any rhythm you wanted & you could change the rhythm or set it to free run.We would set the scene (per one of our actual calls as it arrived at the doors to the ER). Then we used every trick thrown at us in the Field & ER, to better prepare these personnel & ourselves. A few examples are as a IV line disconnection or being pulled out, changes in cardiac rhythm, vomiting during introbation, etc.
They Loved us yet Hated to see us comming, but in the end were very glad that we had visited.

In 1982 I left Darnall and went to work for the Texas Department of Corrections as an MA-1 (Medical Officer) at the Coffield Unit then at the Gatesville Valley Unit.
As an MA-1 you did almost everything from running sick call, treatments, passing meds, physicals, suturing, x-rays, casting & Trauma. In the latter part of 1984 I left there and registered for LVN school at Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas.

February 14, 1986 I Graduated from LVN School & passed my Boards. I was the first Male to complete the training and graduate from the LVN School at CTC, other males had started in the years befor me but had either dropped out or failed. At that time I went to work for the V.A. Hospital in Temple, Texas on the Oncology Unit, and from there I was eventually forced to take a Medical-Disability Retirement after 26 1/2 years with the Federal Government.

During my time at Darnall and at V.A. I was taking classes aimed for entrance to the RN program, but with my disabilities was unable to comlpete these classes let alone continue to work at all and have been retired since Oct. 1986. The reasons for disability retirement were: DJD, COPD, CHF & Emphsema.
