Jarrett Wins Under Caution

Daytona International Speedway; Daytona Beach, FL February 20, 2000 - Dale Jarrett's crew was working all morning to get the #88 Quality Care Ford in race condition by 12:15 ET Sunday. The crew's hard work paid off as the pole sitter led most of the race. The Fords definitely dominated the race, finishing first through fifth. Just one Chevy finished in the top-12; the #5 Kellogs Monte Carlo driven by Terry Labonte finished 7th.

Jarrett made his final pass on Johnny Benson on a restart 197 laps into the 200 lap event. Benson was left out to dry and fell all the way back to twelfth position. Benson brought his plain white #10 Pontiac to Daytona hoping to run well enough to find a sponsor. His good run in the Bud Shootout caught the eyes of Lycos.com. Lycos.com will sponsor him for the 2000 season. On lap 198, Jimmy Spencer hit the wall bringing out the sixth caution of the day, and giving Dale Jarrett his third Daytona 500 victory in just eight attempts. Jarrett received the ten bonus points for leading a lap and also leading the most laps of the race. He was followed by Jeff Burton, Bill Elliott, Rusty Wallace, and Mark Martin. 1999 Dayonta winner Jeff Gordon saw his chances of repeating last year's victory disappear early, when an oil leak cost him five laps. He finished five laps back in 34th. Gordon and Labonte's Hendrick teammate was having a good run in his debut in the #25 Michael Holigan Chevy until he was forced to come in for a late pit stop putting him five laps back and finishing in 35th. Complete results can be found here.

The second race of the 2000 Winston Cup Series, the Dura Lube/KMart 400 at North Carolina Speedway, will start at 12:35 PM Eastern on February 27. The race will be televised on TNN and radio coverage will be provided by MRN.
